I've been thinking lately about some of the more obscure tactics that can be used to generate links. These generally include most of the following broad categories:

• Humor
• Conflict
• The Bizzare
• Secret Information
• The Nefarious
• Fun

Examples of these techniques include the recent SEO Quiz, Henk Van Ess' SearchBistro, the SEO-via-Voodoo site and others. The questions that keep me interested are:

1. Are these tactics effective over the long run?
2. Do they generate the right kind of traffic?
3. Are they equally applicable to multiple industries?
4. Can there be overkill with these practices?
