Over a year ago Rand published his revealing piece into the accuracy of traffic estimation tools such as Alexa, Compete and Google Trends and I was fascinated by the apparent abject failure of these services. Further studies only heightened my interest in the topic. It was clear, based on observation and some data, that these tools were not doing a great job.

For anyone who hasn't been following this week/last week's whole Google and Bing copying and not copying saga, let me fill you in.
Google noticed late last year that Bing were showing the same result as Google for a misspelled query (torsorophy which should have been spelt, tarsorrhaphy). But Bing showed no spelling correction in their result. The news was broken via Danny Sullivan in another great investigative journalistic pieces.

17 year old data nerd from Dublin, Ireland - started TheOpenAlgorithm project which currently has conducted a large scale correlation study of the Google algorithm and plans further studies dealing with other search engines and utilising better data analysis tools than correlations.
Also founder of DropMining a software service offering premium data on expiring domain names.
