Parallax scrolling websites are not limited to one page web design which is bad for SEO. Parallax scrolling is a design technique that can be applied to multiple pages on one website. Many people confuse one page web design with parallax scrolling. Parallax scrolling is not limited to one page web design.

Ok I forgot to add something to this as well. Why would the URLS show up on the smartphone report if they are not on the desktop report? Afterall a 404 from either device is still a 404?

I have a very specific SEO question. I am doing a site audit and one of the crawl reports is showing tons of 404's for the "smartphone" bot and with very recent crawl dates. If our website is responsive, and we do not have a mobile version of the website I do not understand why the desktop report version has tons of 404's and yet the smartphone does not. I think I am not understanding something conceptually.

I think it has something to do with this little message in the Mobile crawl report.

"Errors that occurred only when your site was crawled by Googlebot (errors didn't appear for desktop)."

If I understand correctly, the "smartphone" report will only show URL's that are not on the desktop report. Is this correct?

Thank you for your advise. The marketplace is going to be a big site so I think we will go with using both filters (mostly for product segmentation) and folders for blog pages, contact pages and so forth. Thanks again.

Thanks for getting back to me. Your "Follow the winner" advise I think is spot on and from what I see "winners" are using filters more than folders for products. The site I am working on is going to be a big Marketplace (more than 450.00 products) and so I think I will go with the filters approach mostly. We will be adding region as a filter. I will use folders for blogs, contact pages, and so forth.

I am participating in the development of a marketplace website where the main channel will be traffic via SEO. We have encountered the directories (levels) vs filters situation.

1. Does everyone still agree that if we have too many levels, authority is loss as you do down through the levels? Does everyone agree that there should be a max of 3 levels and never 4.

Example 1

www.domain.com/level1/level2/level3

vs

www.domain.com/level1

In theory, the content on "level 3" will have a lower DA than the content on "level1".

2. Does everyone agree that for enterprise SEO (huge marketplace websites) filters are a better idea than levels?

Example 2

www.domain.com/level1/level2/level3

vs

www.domain.com/filter-option1

In theory, the content on "level 3" will have a lower DA than the content on "filter-option1".

Thanks Everyone for helping me out on this one. I will be drastically changing the title and then fetching it from Google to see what happens. I will let you know the outcome.

Great idea Keszi but here is the really weird thing. Google is taking all the titles I set for all the internal pages but the only page that is off is the homepage. I keep thinking there is something wrong in the code but I review it and it looks fine.

I did change the meta and title at the same time so technically Google should have picked up the new title and it did not. I am tempted to change the title radically to see if Google sees the change. What do you think?

No Follow links do not leak link juice but there is a new concept in SEO called co-citation. Basically Google and other search engines are using mentions (semantics) http://moz.com/blog/prediction-anchor-text-is-dying-and-will-be-replaced-by-cocitation-whiteboard-friday to determine how to rank your website. I suspect this is Google's effort to try and reduce spam and the linkbuilding business. The more mentions you get the better your website will rank and especially if the website has authority

Just a thought but if you have over-optimized a specific anchor text instead of disavowing the links you may want to add more links but with different anchor text so that the anchor text looks more diverse. I'll give you an example.

Over-optimizaed anchor text = "abc"

Hypothetical Current situation

• Amount of "abc" links = 25
• Name brand links = 100

Hypothetical Solution

• Amount of "abc" links = 25
• Name brand links = 100
• New links with "def" anchor text = 10
• New links with "ghi" anchor text = 10

Moz is a great place to find agencies in my opinion. When choosing and agency, here are some tips

1. Ask to see their portfolio and success cases
2. Choose a White Hat company. There is such a thing as black hat SEO and you don't want to go down this road.
3. Ask to their latest work and how they go the site ranked.
4. Call their clients to see if their clients are happy
5. Don't choose the cheapest agency. Choose the most responsible one.

I ran into a similar issue while we were redesigning our site. This is what we did. We unblocked our site (we also had a user and password to avoid Google indexing it). We added the link to a Moz campaign. We were very careful not to share the URL (developing site) or put it anywhere where Google might find it quickly. Remember Google finds links from following other links. We did not submit the developing site to Google webmaster tools or Google analytics. We watched and waited for the Moz report to come in. When it did, we blocked the site again.

Hi Bob,

We do content marketing ourselves and here is something we have learned. If your PR is high enough and your article is niche enough, you will rank without any incoming links. See attachment.

I recommend you contact people that are interested in the topic and see if they have an article similar to yours but not quite as indepth. Chances are they will want to link to your niche article from theirs.

We had something similar happen to us. I will tell you the story because I really do think it will help.

One of our clients liked our originally website so much that he wanted to copy it. We gave him the ok but asked him to modify the content 100% so that Google would not penalize us. He gave us access to his Google Analytics. Our client did not modify the content for about 6 months. Google recognized this as a duplicated site and our clients website received absolutely no traffic at all for keywords. The only way to get to his website was by searching his brand name. This was a great relief to us. Google penalized him not us. After about 6 months, the client finally got around to changing his content and when he did, he started ranking for keywords words.

In your case, I would disavow the chinese website and notify the Google Spam team.

First of all congrats on the great new technique. I recently wrote an article about SEO Parallax Scrolling and Responsive websites. There is a website using the hashtag method that is semi SEO friendly here http://flowerbeauty.com/.

However that being said

To answer your concer "but my current concern is that because each subpage is really a part of the primary page, will all those URL's be seen as duplicate content". I believe Google will see this as a multiple page site as long as you have different content on different URL's. Why don't you try adding parallax scrolling to each SEO url and have the scroll function take you to each URL like www.flowerbeauty.com did. Make sure to optimize your URL's as well.

For example

www.example.com/About

as you scroll it would take you too

www.example.com/About/optimized-URL.

I would get rid of the hashtags.

I agree with Alice I would not block them. If the content is unique, they can't hurt you. Category sections show up an SERP's all the time and will increase your CTR (click thru rate)

Onsite SEO  - 30%

Offsite SEO - 70%

From what I can see based on the images you attached, your competitor has many more links than you (or your client) and the c-block variation is big. C-blocks are really important.

I would go for dofollow links with the right anchor text. Becareful not to over optimize your keyword . It is really easy to do. 

Their social media is way ahead of yours as well. I would start with getting more white hat keyword links.
