Its about 6 months now since Google announced they were going to start using site speed as a ranking factor. While this caused the usual hoo-rar in the search industry for about 5 minutes the buzz died down quicker than with other announcements this year.

Before I became a full time SEO I was developing websites for years, and while I enjoyed the finished result something always sat a bit uneasy with me about the web design/ development process; basically, its in the wrong order. I would expect most readers will have noted this or something similar themselves, so I guess this article is more of an attempt to help the enlightened explain and build a case for a better web development process (which ultimately leads to a more successful SEO campaign).

I was cruising around the Internet doing some research for a pitch the other day, and as I often do in such cases I had switched off javascript on my browser and forgotten to switch it back on again. That’s how I stumbled upon this beaut of a piece of crude ‘black-hatting’.

For ages I was on the boat with SEOs who moan about the stupidity of nofollow. But recently I've moved away from this school of thought. Now I definitely haven't moved to the side of the fence that sides with Google in saying that nofollow either a) cuts down on comment spam, or b) improves the quality of search results.
