24 Ways I'm Using AI Tools for SEO

The author's views are entirely their own (excluding the unlikely event of hypnosis) and may not always reflect the views of Moz.

As an SEO professional, I’ve been overwhelmed by the sheer number of SEO AI tools flooding the market. It’s become nearly impossible to identify which ones solve SEO problems.

That’s why I’ve taken the time to test and curate a list of AI tools that have improved my SEO process. Whether you’re looking for no-code tools, SEO automation, or AI to help you become more efficient, you’ll find something you can add to your workflow from my list.

Let’s dig in.

AI tools for SEO and content research

  1. Moz AI: Improved keyword research with search intent Insights

Screenshot of Moz search intent feature

During the webinar, Chima Mmeje mentioned Moz AI as an incredible resource for keyword research and search intent analysis. According to Chima, the tool helps you understand the keywords a website ranks for and the intent behind each search query, making it easier to develop content strategies that align with what searchers are looking for.

Moz search intent model uses a two layer process

Moz AI stands out because of its unique two-layer model for identifying search intent. The first layer is an ML classification model trained on search intent data, and the second layer is a rules-based model built on years of research and expertise about Google SERP signals. This dual approach ensures that the intent classification is accurate and actionable.

Here’s how Chima uses Moz AI in her SEO workflow:

  • AI-powered search intent analysis: Moz AI’s search intent feature in Keyword Explorer automatically classifies keywords into four key categories: InformationalNavigationalCommercial, and Transactional. This helps Chima understand where a searcher is on their journey and what type of content meets the searcher’s needs.
  • Domain Search Theme and Keyword Topics: Moz AI’s Domain Overview Tool offers a high-level view of a domain’s overall search theme, providing insights into how Google perceives a website. According to Chima, It also breaks down the site’s keywords into up to five distinct Domain Keyword Topics, helping you understand the site’s primary focus areas. This is particularly useful when analyzing competitor or planning a content strategy, as it shows where to target your efforts.

2. Persona writing with SparkToro to improve audience insights

Persona writing with Sparktoro

When creating in-depth personas, I combine the power of ChatGPT with data from SparkToro. SparkToro provides rich audience insights, including demographic information, online behaviors, and social media activity, which I feed into ChatGPT to generate highly detailed and actionable personas.

  • Audience data input: I input SparkToro’s insights, including audience interests, platforms they frequent, and engagement behaviors, into ChatGPT.
  • Persona creation: ChatGPT generates detailed personas with key traits like motivations, pain points, and preferred communication styles.
  • Strategic alignment: These personas help me fine-tune content and SEO strategies, ensuring they meet the specific needs and behaviors of the target market.

Here’s how I use this approach:

  • Generate vector embeddings: I use custom JavaScript to extract text from each page and generate vector embeddings. These numerical representations of content allow me to compare semantic similarities between pages.
  • Map internal links: I identify unlinked but related pages by analyzing vector embeddings. This improves internal link structures, passing link equity and boosting rankings.
  • Automate keyword mapping: I automate keyword-to-page assignments by mapping keywords to the most semantically relevant pages. This enhances targeting, ensuring that each page ranks for appropriate queries.
  • Perform content gap analysis: Vector embeddings help me spot content gaps. This method reveals areas that need deeper coverage, guiding my content creation and optimization decisions.

Here’s how I use ChatGPT to write meta descriptions:

  • Automating meta descriptions: I input the core topics or target keywords, and ChatGPT generates optimized descriptions tailored for search engines.

  • Providing relevant links: I give ChatGPT a list of links and anchor texts, then prompt it to find the most appropriate positions for each link.
  • Automating the process: ChatGPT suggests or inserts the links directly into the content, improving the internal linking structure and adding value for readers.

13. TL;DR generation for significant updates with ChatGPT

TLDR generation for significant updates with ChatGPT

Google’s algorithm tracks how often content is updated and uses this data to influence crawl frequency and rankings. To ensure that my content signals to Google that it’s regularly refreshed, I use ChatGPT to generate TL;DR summaries that I add to my pages. These summaries give an updated overview of the content without requiring a complete rewrite.

Here’s how I use ChatGPT for TL;DR generation:

  • Generate concise summaries: I create quick, accurate overviews of content that I add to pages without needing a total rewrite.
  • Trigger significant update signals: Adding fresh TL;DR summaries triggers Google’s “last significant update” signal, improving crawl frequency and rankings.

15. Persona modeling with ChatGPT

Persona modeling with ChatGPT

Understanding your audience is critical to any successful SEO or content strategy, and building detailed personas is a vital part of that process. With ChatGPT, I streamline persona modeling by feeding it research data, audience insights, and market reports, which it then organizes into actionable personas.

Here’s how I use ChatGPT for persona modeling:

  • Generate audience insights: I input demographic data, behavioral traits, and pain points into ChatGPT, which it uses to create detailed personas, including customer goals and challenges.

  • Tailored communication styles: ChatGPT helps define the preferred communication styles of different personas, making it easier to create audience-specific content.

  • Strategic alignment: The personas I create with ChatGPT guide my content, product, and marketing strategies, ensuring alignment with the target audience.

16. Page title writing with ChatGPT

Page title writing with ChatGPT

ChatGPT is phenomenal at optimizing page titles. Instead of manually writing page titles for every page, I automatically use ChatGPT to generate numerous variations.

Here’s how I use ChatGPT for page titles:

  • Generate multiple variations: I feed keywords and context into ChatGPT to create numerous title options that suit SEO needs and user intent.
  • Test long and short titles: I experiment with different title lengths to see what performs best on Google, as longer titles may still be weighted.
  • Improve click-through rates: Testing various versions helps me identify which titles drive the most clicks and engagement.
