Ask any SEO and they will tell you just how important it is to do keyword research. Not only do you need to find keywords that are related to your niche but you need to figure out which ones are actually obtainable for your site. Everyone talks about the “low hanging fruit” and maximizing the long tail keywords. What about the juggernaut keywords? Which keywords are arguable the most difficult to obtain a first page listing for? *Note - I am only referring to the difficulty in obtaining these rankings, not the effectiveness of the traffic it would bring a particular website.

Using the SEOmoz Keyword Difficulty Tool I have accumulated a list of what according to the tool would be some of the most difficult keywords to rank for in the Google search engine. Why put together a list like this? Why not? So much time is dedicated to being serious and getting down to business sometimes it’s just fun to really ‘play’ with the tools available to us. This isn’t something out of the ordinary for me to write about, some of you might remember my SEO name analysis using the Google Keyword Tool.  In the end, its just for fun. On to the results ...

This obviously doesn’t take in account every keyword imaginable. These keywords had the highest difficult percentage that I could think of at the time of conducting this little experiment.  I tried to avoid business names or product names when compiling this list so that in theory no brand would have an advantage for ranking for these terms.  IE: Apple ranking for "Ipod"

Just narrowly missing the list:   Rent 76%, Win  75%, Buy  72%,

Top 5 Most Difficult Sports Keywords To Rank For In Google
Much more interest tends to be tied to sports. So if you were adamant about ranking for the sport name you might want to take a look at this list as well.

There you have it, some of the most difficult keywords to rank for according to SEOmoz Keyword Difficulty tool. The keywords listed above may not be the absolute most competitive but a very experienced SEO and a large-huge budget would need to be applied. What keywords can you find that have a higher keyword difficulty percentage? While I tried to focus on single word keywords the highest percentage I was able to obtain was 97% with the key phrase “Click Here”.
