Category: Link Building

Chat through link building best practices and outreach techniques.

  • I have a site I launched a few months back, and the niche isn't all that competitive. After a bit of work the domain is now sitting near the bottom of page 2 on google but it's number 2 in yahoo search. I have been manually building the links but they are all targeted to just one keyword, and mainly have the same link text. Will this look suspicious to google, and should I be spreading my anchor text over different keywords? Or is the reason Im ranking so well in yahoo be because they are just picking up more backlinks? 23 from yahoo but only 9 from google.

  • Hello Everyone, We have about 15 clients who we need to do link building for but I am at a loss on how to even begin. Does anybody have any tips or tricks to achieving quality back links in a short amount of time? Any help is appreciated!

  • Something I had been pondering with all the new updates and signals Google is looking at, and also considering the fact that many website's overdo internal linking and almost everyone uses exact match anchor text for it. So my question is - is it effect or counter-effective to vary your anchor text for internal links? If you think its effective, what is a reasonable proportion for exact anchor text match to varied ones.

  • Need to give our web partners our booking form which must be loaded in an iframe calling back to our domain. Is it possible to pass any link juice from their domain loading our iframe back to us. Was thinking of a "Powered by" text link in the form footer, but I'm guessing the link needs to be outside the iframe. Would love to hear any thoughts or workarounds on this.

  • Hi there, I have been doing some outreaching, and managed to have a blog post accepted on a authority blog. They included links to my website, and I was very pleased with the placement. However, having browsed through the site, I was worried to see that they openly admit they allow 'reviews' of websites, with backlinks included, for $50 per review. I am worried I might be penalised without actually doing anything wrong. I did not pay for my link, but the link has been placed on a site which openly admits they accept payment for links. Should I be worried? Should I ask them to take it down? To date I have been told countless times by bloggers I am outreaching that if I pay $10, $50, $100 etc I can write a blog post. I have never accepted because of the risk of penalization. Now, unwittingly, I am linked to from a paid link site with a blog post that would look like I have paid for it because of the placement and style of back link. What do you think? Thanks,

  • Looking to do some paid directory submissions and was wondering if a) they were still worth the money and b) if you have $500-$1,000 what paid directories would you submit too? I am assuming that BOTW is still on the list, but I rarely every see a BOTW link in any backlink report. Are they still relevant or are they more a sign of quality to the engines rather than an actual link? Same with JoeAnt

  • I recently accuired about 10 PR 4- 5 for my website after getting mostly PR 1-2 for the past 6 months. After a couple of day my rankings not only didn't go up, but actually went down really drasticly for many keyphrases that i used to rank at the top 3. Should i keep building those high PR links in the same fast pace, should i slow down? Or maybe i should even those out with some low PR link?

  • Hi, Does anybody know of any good UK Link Building training courses or trainers? I have read loads of information on here and other sites which tells you that you need to get good high quality links but have not found much information on exactly how you go about doing this (apart from looking at competitors links - which is easy). So I would love to get some training for me and another team member here on Link Building specifically. We have all the other areas of SEO pretty much covered and get pretty good rankings for long tail and some broad phrases.  We just need a bit of extra Link Building help to boost some rankings up even further. Thanks in advance Andy

  • We're creating a new website for a client, and we have already started link building to the pages, including some deep landing pages. Currently the site is blocked from being indexed - we're just concerned that there may be issues when we launch the site as there will be a lot of links pointing towards the pages from day 1. Are we ok to continue link building?

  • Hi All, I am setting up a new website with a fresh domain on an existing server. I can foresee that linkbuilding is pretty easy in this sector and it wouldn't be that difficult to build as many as 200 links a month. What I wanted to ask was whether it is possible to put a figure on the maximum number of links I could build without incurring a spam related penalty? Could I for instance start with say 50 links / month and then in increase that by 25 links / month for the next couple of months to seetle for something around the 100 links/month mark? Thanks in advance

  • Where to start on building links for a news website? Should I focus on promoting individual articles or create linkbait and create friends with influential blogger/editors/ and news websites in the same niche?

  • I use links with href="#" to trigger ajax functions in order to filter/sort and refresh  search results on page. Since several other html tags could potentially be used to bind a javascript event, (ie. span, img, div, etc), could there be a compelling reason to avoid using the anchor tag for this purpose? My concern is link juice dilution since many different pages will have the same links to: Sort by number of bedrooms or Filter by neighborhood. It is also common practice to use links with href="#" to submit ajax forms which are not html forms at all. I am just trying to rethink this practice and implement a best practice method. Thx

  • What is the relationship one vs. the other. What if DA is high and PA very low? I guest the best is to have the highest PA & DA? Will it influence results to have a link from a site with a DA of 80 and a PA of 0 for example? Thank you, Jean

  • I continue to get link exchange invitations. Apart from the fact that the links I connect to should be relevant, is there an ideal no. of outbound links that I should maintain - or maybe a ratio or something? Should I even consider their page ranks - and do I have that right when mine is not that high (the last question may be stupid but I still want know). Thanks.

  • Does Google (or other search engines) penalize websites if they have a too many inbound links from a single domain? (Say for instance, I have 500 inbound links, and 400 of them are from one root domain.)

  • I'm just starting to learn about cblock root domains and linking.  I'm wondering about the following: Are there articles or websites to learn about dos and don'ts about getting a large number of links from one cblock? How do I know when a site has too many links versus the number of unique cblocks? I've been using Link Harvester on SEO Book and it seems like not many sites have more than 170 unique cblocks.  Is this the total number of unique cblocks on the web or am I using the tool wrong?

  • All the articles on my blog are written on my own. I write about 5 ones per month. I don't know if i should post my articles to other forums or sharing sites to create back links? I have heard that it may cause adverse effect because my blog will be crawled more slowly than those forums, so Google will consider the articles on my blog (as) copies. Is that right?

  • Hi, we're a b2b publishing house and we 15 different b2b portals in several industries. There is a non profit org, that has created a microsite keyword rich (www.5permilledifferenza.net). We would like to help it with our portals. We've placed banner on them, but now we would like to write posts in each portal that contain the keyword. Now the point is that our editors cannot write every time an original blogpost for that. The non profit has given us a sample text, beatiful and quite long, with some anchor text in it. Which is the best strategy then? It's a new situation we've never encountered. I have in mind the following choices just say to our editors to post it customizing it when possible. we would then have 15 pages quite similar in 15 different portals of different industries that point to the same links make it short, with only one anchor text, and then have 15 different pages allow the editor posting only if the editors are 'inspired' and could write an original content (we would have then just 2 or 3 post with link) upload the same pdf, with the same links built in, on every portal (that could be connected with either of the previous) Thanks!

  • Hi everyone, During linkbuilding you often stumble upon those links you are not quite sure of. At first it may seem like a brilliant idea to get a link fom that site but on a second look it may be not. So what would be a checklist of things to look for, if one is asessing a website's link quality? (e.g. how do you spot a bad neighborhood?) If you are using SEOmoz tools for the quality asessment, which one would you use? Looking forward to your answers! Thx for the help in advance! Regards Thorsten

  • Hi All, So once you use OSE Tool to point you in the right direction of sites that might be able to give you links, what are the best practices for then reaching out to the website?  I get that you need to give value in your request for a link and offer something of value – but what else to think about?? Ie Call them, email them, email who?  Follow up with phone call??? Do you just use the standard contact form on their website?  Presumably you need to track all this, just do it in a spreadsheet? What do you say in the email?  Do you offer them a link (if you can?) I guess it’s a thing that sounds easy enough – go get a link – but I would imagine that people who have done this enough with some success can maybe share some of the things that particularly worked or did not work… At the moment it just seems a daunting  / time consuming task  - even thinking of getting an intern to help do all this – pros and cons to that as well??? Thanks for your time!

  • Is there a way to leverage paid advertisements placed in industry specific publications to get SEO benefits? I am looking to advertise in publications like trade journals or magazines, but want to also reap SEO benefits by getting a link. So I am avoiding buying banner ads, but instead trying to find opportunities for links from editorial mentions, quality article or editorial submissions, etc. Advice on the link proposition, or best way to approach editors, please? Many of these publications are traditional print publications, and their sites are really seo'd. Thanks.

  • Does using referral programs, such as by using index.php?referral_id=0001 pass any link juice back to the page index.php? I'm creating a web app that ideally I'd like people to be able to link to and bookmark - so that they can pull up their own settings. Is there any way that I can solve both of these at once? The use of PHP GET and the use of SEO. I'd really like to get a solution as I'm developing my new website! Any help would be appreciated!

  • Hi, I would like to know if currently Google tracks pagerank. Also, I would like to know if link values are calculated from 1 - 100 number? For example could a front-page link from a large
PR 9 news site  have a value of 80 and a link from PR1 blog have a value of 1? Is this generally how link values are calculated? Im pretty new to SEO, so i would just like to know about link weights and how they are calculated?

  • Hello, I would like to ask if I can submit the same article to multiple article directories. I have read that while only the first published article will gain credit and show on search engines, but the all the  links generated from  the  publishing the article at different sites will still tally up and count as separate backlinks to my website. Is this true, or is 1 or a few links going to be counted from the 1 article?

  • Hey SEO Mozosphere - Working on a link buying strategy. I know it is wise to target not only anchor text links but also branded text links to keep your anchor text distribution looking natural. However, do you think it would be too risky to ask for branded text links only from low PR sites and focus the more valuable keyword anchor text links on high PR sites?

  • I ran the SEOmoz Competitive Link Finder tool for my URL and 5 of my competitors. The #1 result (where 3 of my competitors are listed but I'm not) is google.com.sg. Here's the URL where they are listed: http://www.google.com.sg/alpha/Top/Business/Investing/Derivatives/Options/Research_and_Analysis/ All 5 of us are US-based companies. Why would 3 of them be listed in the Singapore version of Google but not me? Is it common practice to add your URL to all local versions of Google, or should submission to the main google.com be enough?

I have all sorts of tools to track the number of overall inbound links to my site, but is there an easy tool to check for specific new inbound links from one specific page/site..aka if I set up a link in a directory or I get a mention in an article.. what is the easiest way to search to see if this link has been picked up by google and how much link juice it might be giving to my site? Thanks for your time, John

  • Dear Mozers, I start promoting my website www.buy-hosting.net on a daily basis now. I would like to know, how many links would you seed per day. As far as I understood, it is important to stay constant in the number of links to seed every day. But isn't there a danger of going to the sandbox, if the number is to high? The domain has no ibound links yet and although it is 2 years old was only parked until now. Thank you for your advice and kind regards

  • My client is in the clothing, apparel tshirt industry geared toward a specific music icon. They have a few competitors, my spider senses tell me I will be able to get them great SERP standing, and place them in a very competitive position. Their company has been around for a while but has never written a press release. I had them craft a PR on the subject of cotton prices and how it has affected their business. A local paper will pick this up no prob. Where is the best place to go? It is not like it is breaking news, I dont want duplicate content, and I need an experts advice. I will provide more details if needed. Thank Mozzers!
