  • I am about to post my first Infographic and have a question. The graphic is fairly long and was wondering, is it better to split this graphic up in to chunks? So that it loads in stages? I am new to this and would be great if someone could point me to the latest and best practices for infographics. I have seen a few articles but they appear to be old. Thanks for your help

  • Hi, I have a construction website that is aimed at tradesmen. There are 2 goals of the site: 1. To allow potential customers to sign up for a trade account. 2. To allow existing customers to access to products and login to their account to make an order. The site is full of categories and products which should be indexed so we rank for these trade products. The homepage redesign is where i am having an issue: Currently the site is set up like a standard retail site but without prices, which are viewable only when logged in. The homepage is designed such that there is several call to actions about promotions, services and to apply for a trade account, that apply to both existing and potential customers. At the moment there is a poor conversion to get potential customers to apply for a trade account. This is because there is too much distraction away from this goal and they are allowed to engage other areas of the site freely. The main purpose of the homepage should be to encourage potential customers to sign up. The secondary purpose to for existing customers to access the accounts and products. I believe potential customers should not be exposed to the categories and products as it is a distraction from the primary goal. Potential customers, i.e. Tradesmen, would already have a certain understanding of the types of products we provide, so I don't feel it is necessary to allow them to crawl the rest of the site unless they have an account. What are your thoughts on that? Here is my lack of understanding: On the homepage, if I restrict access to categories and products to existing account holders only, where a login is required to proceed, would that mean Google cannot access these pages to index them? Or is this only controlled by NoFollows & Robots.txt? Obviously not indexing is undesirable. I do understand potential customers will need some information about our range of products but the idea is to coerce them to sign up for an account so they can see this information. The more information that is provided to a potential customer, the higher the probability a person can make a decision against applying for an account. Restricting access creates a motivator to reveal information and we capture their data to converse with them personally. This increases the probability of us being able to retain their interest by providing a customised service based on their needs. All of this I feel makes perfect sense to me, the only query/obstacle I have is the indexing of the site. If Google cannot index pages that are restricted by account access, then I would like suggestions to solve/compromise/optimise the above. Just to address the desired behaviour of index pages. If in search a our product page appears, the person clicking the link would either be redirected or exposed to a login or sign up screen to view. Thank you so much for your help. Antonio

  • Hi there, I need some help how best to represent the geographical coverage of our businesses on our websites and in Google Local. We are a supplier of construction materials. We have a retail business and a trade business.  We have a HQ and several branches in locations across the UK.  Our delivery area expands from those locations. We also acquired some time ago a website that ranked highly for one of our products. In summary we have:retail website trade website niche product website (brand not related to company) The products are largely the same (some variations between sites) but of course the language used on the pages might be optimized for different search terms to attract different customers i.e. retail and trade.   The niche product website actually competes with the retail for ranking for those product pages and I believe should be removed and all traffic directed to the retail site (of course others argue about branding). 1.  How do we represent these businesses in Google? Everything under 1 company name? e.g.  Joe Bloggs Construction Supplies Or separate names? e.g.  Joe Bloggs Construction Supplies Joe Bloggs Construction Trade Supplies Joe Bloggs Niche Product Supplies 2.  The location As I understand, its poor form to tell Google we have 3 businesses at the same address. e.g. Joe Bloggs Construction Supplies - London addressJoe Bloggs Construction Trade Supplies - London addressJoe Bloggs Niche Product Supplies - London address A suggestion is to modify the address to put 10A street, 10B street, etc to make them uniquely identifiable.  Is this the best practise?  What about telephone numbers? Also even though we have several branch locations, the website we'll want to direct them to will be the same.  Is this OK or do we need to direct them to the branch page within the website so the URLs are considered unique?  If this is the case, this would have an impact on CTR as the visitor would land on a contact page instead of a page leading to products. Also in the title field on the Google Local page, should we: State the company name e.g Joe Bloggs Construction SuppliesState the company name and business type e.g.  Joe Bloggs Construction Trade SuppliesState the company name, business type and location e.g.  Joe Bloggs Construction Trade Supplies - London 3.  Indexing & Coverage area Google Local provides a description box and categories that our business falls under. Should we follow the categories that are suggested by Google when we start typing in the category box or make our own based on our main product/category keywords? Say we identified a category "timber supplies" and mentioned this keyword within the description text as well; are the categories and keywords in the description text considered when listing the business in search or is it content found via the URL given in the Google Local profile? Would this then consider locations mentioned in the description to return our company in search results for the category + location mentioned in the text? Under delivery/coverage area, If I specify a county/state.  Would we then be considered in search results for terms that mention cities within that county/state? Currently, we do not appear for many local searches within our delivery coverage area even though specified in Google Local.  I would like to understand how to improve this.  We have a good domain authority and rank highly for broad search terms but not so much for local. 4.  Represent coverage for organic search website The last question is how we represent our coverage area on our website.  We cant possibly list all cities or counties we cover on each page, certainly not frequently enough for it to be considered by search engines. Is there some HTML header tag we can use? What is a search engines behaviour concerning a companies location and coverage? Would we need to create articles are pages focused around local search terms e.g. <category or="" product="">in <location>?</location></category> Thank you so much for any help you can give.   • Alright, what gives? Something major with Google SERPs went down on Jan. 17th. I have a site that was ranking well for 7 keywords - normal fluctuations from page 1-3, for 8 months. We never had any issues with Panda/Penguin and in fact, Nov./Dec. were excellent months. Then BAM, on the 17th all but 2 keywords tanked...not even in the top 100! 2 remain on page 2/3 - very odd....I've seen lots of talk about something happening...anyone have a better idea or even KNOW what happened? Thank you!

  • Hi All, I have identified 2 main keywords that I want a website to be found for 1: Alarm Systems 2: Security Systems I have two relevant  landing pages set up and optimised for these terms and I have also optimised the home page for these terms I have countless other pages on the website that I don't really need to optimise such as Distributor Benefits or Supplier Benefits, About Us etc My question is should I use my selected keywords (alarm systems, security systems) in the Meta Title on these non important pages or should I just use them on the selected landing pages and home page? Historically I have used my primary keywords on all non important pages but not sure if Google looks down on this now. Thanks Robbie

  • Last year Google said bad links to 404 pages wouldn't hurt your site. Could that still be the case in light of recent Google updates to try and combat spammy links and negative SEO? Can links to 404 pages benefit a website and pass link juice? I'd assume at the very least that any link juice will pass through links FROM the 404 page? Many websites have great 404 pages that get linked to: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=http%3A%2F%2Fretardzone.com%2F404 - that was the first of four I checked from the "60 Really Cool...404 Pages" that actually returned the 404 HTTP Status! So apologies if you find the word 'retard' offensive. According to Open Site Explorer it has a decent Page Authority and number of backlinks - but it doesn't show in Google's SERPs. I'd never do it, but if you have a particularly well-linked to 404 page, is there an argument for giving it 200 OK Status? Finally, what are the best practices regarding 404s and address bar links? For example, if
    www.examplesite.com/3rwdfs returns a 404 error, should I make that redirect to
    www.examplesite.com/404 or leave it as is? Redirecting to www.examplesite.com/404 might not be user-friendly as people won't be able to correct the URL in the address bar. But if I have a great  404 page that people link to, I don't want links going to loads of random pages do I? Is either way considered best practice? If I did a 301 redirect I guess it would send the wrong signal to the crawlers? Should I use a 302 redirect, or even a 304 Not Modified redirect?

  • Hello, We're in the process of launching MultipleSclerosis.net and are a bit confused with how to present some specific information. Looking at pages such as http://multiplesclerosis.net/symptoms/, http://multiplesclerosis.net/what-is-ms/courses-patterns/ and http://multiplesclerosis.net/treatment/prescription-nonprescription-medications/ is it better to keep this data structured as divs, and style them as tables or to keep them as tables and style them accordingly. Though not technically "tabular" data, i'm not too sure how to handle this. The text to code ratio is quite high with the divs in the markup, which though i'm not overly worried about, it could cause some issues with the site's indexability. Thanks I appreciate any feedback.

  • I have a page with 10 links. 5 of the links are normal links to pages on my site 5 are links contained within an iFrame My understanding is that Google will only pass link juice to the 5 normal links and the iFrame links will be ignored. Am I correct?

  • Hello guys, our website was pandalized on 9/27/2012 and we haven't been able to recover since then. I've fixed as much as possible when it comes to poor content, and we have been getting high quality links consistently for the past 3-4 months. Our blog had some duplicate content issues due to categories, tags, feeds, etc. I solved those problems before the past 2 refreshes without success. I'm considering moving the blog to a subdomain, more than PR, I'm interested in recovering from panda, and let the blog grow on its own. What do you think about that?

  • I need some help figuring out if I should combine multiple domains or if I should let them be separate? I have domain1.com, domain2.com, and domain3.com. Well, domain1.com owns domain2.com and domain3.com. And currently domain1.com points to domain2.com and domain3.com from the homepage. They are going through some changes at their business, and now the option is on the table to combine the domains or still let them be separate as long as they link to each other. What is the best way to handle this and are there more things I should go through before making a decision? None of them have a ton of links to them, and they aren't super robust, but would just to have some advice. Thanks a lot

  • I recently added rich snippets to my website to link my Google+ with my website so that whenever someone looks at my website on Google search it will show my picture. It has yet to show up on the search results and I understand this could take a couple weeks. My question is: will the authorship/picture of me show up on the Google search results no matter if it is the root domain or a blog/article post, or will it only show up on an article post that someone sees in the Google search results. I viewed my root domain in the google rich snippets testing tool and it shows my authorship picture but it is not showing up in the SERPS

Hi everyone, I'm new here 🙂 So far I've had wonderful success seo wise and none of the updates (Penguin nor Panda) affected any sites, until this one. For example, one site has 7 keywords I'm optimizing for. Out of those 7, all but 2 (and variations of the 2 - one word vs long-tail) completely tanked. These keywords were all on page 2/3. One of the two survivors never budged from page 2 (it's a brand keyword so I was very happy to finally get it to page 2) Now when I check rankings, the other terms show up in the 200-400 spots, but NOT for the URL I was optimizing for (category page) but instead for random products in the category. The only thing I've done differently with the 2 keywords that are still doing well, was focus - we did more link-building for those, but not an extreme amount. Never over-optimize. My question is, how did 2 survive and 5 are still floating up and down. Last night I saw one go up 122 spots, now today down 14. I'm really struggling with this. I just ran another diagnostic crawl here and the report found 0 errors and 0 warnings. I checked category content with a plagiarism checker and found some external duplicate content which I've already taken care of. No critical warnings/messages in WMT either. I'm stumped 😞 Thank you for any help.

  • Hi Everyone, I have a dog breeder site I'm working on and I was wondering if I could get some tips and ideas on things to do to help the "category" pages rank better in search engines. Let's say I have "xyz" breed category page which has listings of all dog breeders who offer that particular breed, in this case "xyz". I have certain breeder profile listings which rank higher for those terms that the category page should be ranking for.  So I'm guessing Google thinks those breeder profile pages are more relevant for those terms.  Especially if well optimized. I know thin content may be my problem here, but one of our competitors dominates the rankings for relevant keywords with no content on their category pages. What do you all suggest?

  • Hi, I have a website which was gaining good rankings through 2012 and even looked in pretty good shape after all of the Penguin and Panda updates in 2012 but in Jan 2013 the sites rankings have been very poor as it dropped for all terms. It is still in the index and webmaster tools shows the sites keywords but is showing places of 100 or so rather than 10 - 16 in the seeps. The website is www.mywebsitehosting.org Any ideas why this has dropped in January and what can I do to fix it? Thanks. P.s I have made a change to the homepage content but inner pages for the website also dropped to which have the same content as they did a few months ago.

  • Hi, about 20-30 hours ago my own brand name disappeared from google results (We redirected old domain to new one about a month ago) My website is: www.websiteplanet.com If you search for Website Planet in google you will not find our homepage any longer.
    Not only that the brand name disappeared but we also dropped in rankings and lost about %50 of the organic traffic we had. It's important for me to say that we have never done any sort of blackhat or even greyhat SEO, at all. I could probably come up with many ideas of why it happened but maybe one of you mozzers already experienced this and could enlighten me. Will really appreciate any kind of response/help. Thanks.

  • Greetings from a first time poster and SEO noob... I hope that this question makes sense... I have a small e-commerce site,  I have had Roger-bot crawl the site and I have fixed all errors and warnings that Volusion will allow me to fix. Then I checked Webmaster Tools, HTML improvements section and the Google-bot sees different dupe. title tag issues that Roger-bot did not.  so A few weeks back I changed the title tag for a  product, and GWT says that I have duplicate title tags  but there is only one live page for the product.  GWT lists the dupe. title tags, but when I click on each  they all lead to the same live page.  I'm confused, what pages are these other title tags referring to?  Does Google have more than one page for that product indexed due to me changing the title tag when the page had a different URL? Does this question make sense? 2) Is this issue a problem? 3) What can I do to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated Jeff

  • I addition to running a small web development company and thus having some background to SEO/inbound marketing, I also own a real estate web site at www.nhfinehomes.com. Last year, I had the site recoded with many SEO improvements in mind. The result was a significant boost in traffic/leads and more pages being indexed. One of the challenge with real estate sites is that all my competitors have the same content (house listings) via the IDX feed so the challenge is to try to shape the pages to be a little different. My question is where do I go from here? I'm not sure where to best focus my efforts for maximum improvement. My biggest competitor has tons more links, some of which are just not realistic for a small firm like mine. Is content creation the next step to push out on a Wordpress blog with better internal linking? In Google Analytics, I see tons of keyword phrases that I have low rankings for and wonder if some optimized content could help boost those? What I would like to find is a TRUSTED, proven consultant with PROVEN real estate SEO experience that could take a look at my site, my competition and honestly tell me what it would take to improve so I can better determine how big a nut this is to crack. I am okay with doing most of the work and have my programmer who can help with some of the technical. I just don't want to take stabs in the dark and waste resources on ineffective or worst, potentially damaging results. So anyone here know where I can find such a strategist? Link

  • We're about to delete a bunch of unnecessary pages, largely responsible for our duplicate content woes. These are low traffic pages, and they were NEVER a good user experience. I just want to check and make sure I'll be setting up the proper way to account for their absence: 1. Set up 301's for all of them so they point to related pages 2. Remove them from the Sitemap 3. Also remove any internal links that previously pointed at them. Is there anything else I'm missing here? Or any additional moves I can make that I'm not thinking about? Thanks!

  • We have a large site with 1,000+ pages of content to launch in the UK. Much of this content is already being used on a .nz url which is going to stay.  Do you see this as an issue or do you thin Google will take localised factoring into consideration. We could add a link from the NZ pages to the UK.  We cant noindex the pages as this is not an option. Thanks

  • I was just going over a site I manage and noticed it had a load of meta keywords on it. Probably 10-15 keywords per page... Do you think this is harming the site? Is it worth removing them?

  • One of the sites I work on is a home improvement ecommerce website that does fairly well for its niche. One of the biggest problems that we're not sure how to adequately handle is a heavy internal linking issue. The homepage (http://www.fauxpanels.com/) has approx. 226 internal links which is mainly due to the navigation structure. There are far worse pages though (the Samples page http://www.fauxpanels.com/samples.php has over 800 internal links). For the most part, management doesn't want any massive changes to the navigation layout. The Top navigation bar has a number of dropdown menus when you hover, the Left Navigation Bar expands to show more choices, and the Bottom navigation bar in many instances is just repeats of links that can be found elsewhere. Also, the product links in the body of the page can be found linked in the Left Navigation. This is not what I would personally consider the best way to handle navigation but the Customer Service Department has gotten numerous calls and emails over the years about how much people love our navigation and how easy it is to find things. My thought was trying to lessen the amount of links by having things grouped more often into Category pages/hub pages where applicable so we can remove some of the links. We've also considered NoFollowing links but my understanding is that even if you NoFollow the link equity is still divided by the number of on-page links. So, any of you much more experienced SEOs have any idea how I can lessen the heavy internal linking without completely re-doing the site's navigation layout and not harming link equity, ranking, etc.? Or, conversely, would you consider having an average 200-300 internal links per page not to be a real issue given the positive effect it has apparently had on user experience?

  • I am considering running a competition and wanted to get some feedback on SEO Best Practice. We will have a  unique competition URL - following the completion of the competition it will be 301'd to home page Every entrant will be given a unique URL for the competition to share, if someone enters using there URL they get an extra ticket. This means we will create a large number of new unique URL's over a short period of time, the pages however will have the same content. Is this potentially bad for Duplicate content?Any advice? Perhaps a canonical tag on all unique competition entrant URLs? Any other considerations?

  • How come i google content that resides on my website and on my homepage and my site doesn't come up? I know the content is unique i wrote that. I have a feeling i have some kind of a crawling issue but cannot determine what it is. I ran the crawling test and other tools and didn't find anything. Google shows me that pages are indexed but yet its weird try googling snippets of content and you'll see my site isnt anywhere. Have you experienced that before? First i thought it was penalized but i submitted the reconsideration request and it came back clear, No manual spam action found. And i did not get any message in my GWMT either. Any thoughts?

  • I've noticed with hosting multiple websites on a single account you end up having your main site in the root public_html folder, but when you create subfolders for new website it actually creates a duplicate website: eg. http://kohnmeat.com/ is being hosted on laubeau.com's server. So you end up with a duplicate website: http://laubeau.com/kohn/ Anyone know the best way to prevent this from happening? (i.e. canonical? 301? robots.txt?) Also, maybe a specific 'how-to' if you're feeling generous 🙂

  • Dear All, My website (a rental website where you can hire anything online) currently has approx 1/3 of it's traffic from mobile devices , ipads, iphones, blackberry , HTC etc etc.  The bounce rate is slightly higher for these at 47% but we have not optimised our site to be mobile friendly as yet. This is something I want to do. Do we just make it fit well into a 320 pixel screen or should we do new wire frames etc and essentially make a cut down website just for mobile. One of the things I know we will do is to make it pick up someones location and retrieve results nearest to them but is there any other do's and don'ts when going down the mobile route ?. I seem to find conflicting infomation when researching this , one example is about using a different url for mobile , one site says it gets you more traffic whilst another says don't use a different url. Also does anyone know of any good tips or sites where I can get some useful info about making the site Mobile Friendly >? thanks Sarah.

There seems to be no way to attack the NAP, directory and traditional citation model for a certain region they build in. Any thoughts?

  • Hi, Here`s my domain http://www.kent-website-designer.co.uk/. Registered in 2007. We have took a big hit from the updates in the last 6 months and  its really affecting revenue. I know when you look at the site you may well think WOW this is 2007 SEO and youre right it hasnt been updated in some time as of last year we ranked very highly and it gave us enough business to concentrate on. However up until last year many of my competitors were using same onpage and offpage strategies....and probably a few of you were too! So now the inquiries and income is drying up. However, I provided myself with an income from my efforts, rather than be unemployed, so I want to get it back on track. I visited the Google webmaster forums to query a couple of webmaster account queries and basically got beat up by the rude and arrogant google forum admins. Basically they said I was a spam site who shouldnt be in business. How very nice! 1. I have EMD - but domain age should mean something? 2. I lost a few links from https://www.getsafeonline.org/partners-and-supporters/ in the last year which hasnt helped when they reorganised their content. Same with other trusted sites we lost links. We are left with low quality links. 3. Some CMS sites have replicated our footer links on a large scale, which wasnt intentional but may look as link spam, plus they arent no followed as G prefers. 4. Google seems to have become intelligent? Apparently it can detect content which is negative in outdated seo advice. How, can it understand context and meaning so older seo advice isdetected as spam content? 5. No pages are de indexed just a rank drop to 30 - 60 positions. 6. Over optimised H1`s? 7. Is Pipe command in titles now negative? So its sink or swim time I guess. The siteand domain is honest but neglected and probably should re align the business with what we can offer. We got away with that SEO but clearly things have changed. However with no grey or black hat at least we arent overly worried by removing links. Also looking for an SEO company who we can outsource with a white label solution in order to offer SEO. I dont need beating up, short and to the point critiques please. Pros and Cons Many thanks.

  • I just did a reverse IP Lookup for both my sites and noticed they were on shared WebServers with 370 and 719 domains respectively. A few domains hosted on each IP looked very suspicious too. Is there an advantage of switching my websites to a private IP from an IP shared on a Webserver?

  • Our client recently acquired new county territories outside the main area city. We could create separate location pages under the primary domain, but are wondering if micro sites with unique content (and location-including url) that links back to the location pages would also be a good idea. There is some traction for certain location-based keywords in those areas. Better to focus on the one domain, or augment with separate websites in different parts of the state? I can come up with plausible reasons for and against either, but would love your thoughts. Thank you for any insight!

The site is about training courses, and the url structure is something like: training-course/date/time I only really want the search engines to index the actual training course pages, which is the better option for me and why?: a) rel=canonical b) noindex, nofollow Thanks, Gary.

  • I am seeing some huge shifts in SERPS at the moment, for some keywords such as web design.  Nearly every single result on the homepage is a different company than 2 weeks ago.  We are seeing some clients have huge jumps in ranks but also some are dropping. Seems like we could have a big Panda/Penguin like update rolling out.

  • Hi, What is the best way to use anchor text during link building after recent updates from Google. I thinking of doing the following: 60% Brand Keyword (my site name)
    20% Click here, visit this site etc
    20% myurl.com
    10% a Mix of both broad & phrase match of my targetted keyword. What do you suggest Does anyone have a working strategy? Will be waiting for your replies...

  • Hi I have www.example.net  however trying to judge if it is better having www.example**.**co.uk instead  (as it will be targeted for UK people). I could use Webmaster tool to geographically target UK - however perhaps best to use a .co.uk domain instead. Any views on using a .net ending domain? Many thanks Nigel

When an HTML (.html) file is requested on the Internet, the 'example.tpl' file is accessed, the latest product and and pricing information is accessed, then presented to the viewer as 'example.html' My question: Can the use of .tpl files negatively impact Search Engine acceptance?

  • Hi i've been looking at the affects of googles algorithmic updates over the last couple years and the impact on sites/competitors i have been monitoring in the space. Two sites which surprised me, in having a dramatic decline in search traffic were: kriskris.com (over 200k visitors to around 10k) only-cookware.com (from 40k visitors at its peak to only around 1000k) (semrush traffic data attached) Both sites have great quality content and social signals.   • Hi, This is my site: http://hemorrhoidssuccess.com/ I have got some decent natural links with a mix of different anchor texts. My main keyword is "Hemorrhoids Treatment", And i got very less exact match anchor texts. Now i was able to rank for "Top Hemorrhoid Treatment" on #2 Page, but i was not in the index for the my main keyword "Hemorrhoids Treatment". Can you review my site and let me know, what i am missing? Do i need to get more links? If so with what anchor texts? Will be waiting for your replies.. Thanks in Advance

  • I work for a website that recently did a redesign, and switched from hyphens to underscores. We have seen some drop in traffic, although that may be attributed to the migration. I have read that while Google prefers hyphens, the underscore problem is not as much of an issue as it used to be. Is it worth 301'ing the page to a version of itself with hyphens instead of underscores in the URL?

  • With Google releasing that instructional on proper pagination I finally hunkered down and put in a site change request. I wanted the rel="next" and rel="prev" implemented… and it took two weeks for the guy to get it done. Brutal and painful. When I looked at the source it turned out he put it in the body above the pagination links… which is not what I wanted. I wanted them in the . Before I respond to get it properly implemented I want a few opinions - is it okay to have the rel="next" in the body? Or is it pretty much mandatory to put it in the head? (Normally, if I had full control over this site, I would just do it myself in 2 minutes… unfortunately I don't have that luxury with this site)

  • I am doing link building for an adult dating comparison website. One of the main competitors though, having checked their backlink profile have anchor text that is not varied at all. In fact many, many links that are all the same. How can they possibly rank in the post panda/penguin era? In fact they're at number 2! The site is an adult site and it www.f hypen buddy.co.uk if anyone wants to runa backlink check on OSE. Any help greatly appreciated!
