  • I need to settle this debate with fact not opinions. Does keeping a steady flow of PPC generate ANY organic benefit within google, applying only to the increased ranking of organic keywords. To put it bluntly by paying google money does my organic SEO get better?

  • Hi All, Having just joined we have noticed that we have an alarming amount of 'Too Many On-Page Links' we think this is because of our large navigation menu which can be seen here... www.dirtbikexpress.co.uk We have had our programmer set up some AJAX filters for the category & subcategory pages but are worried that the snapshot or the ugly url that is returned is set up correctly - ie it is just a ugly url duplicate of the same (complete) page does this just need to return the content that has changed? Basically we want to ensure our AJAX and navigation menu is correct as we want to have the same navigation and filtering as many large site do now - John Lewis, Debenhams etc etc. We are finding that some pages are struggling to index and products are proving very tricky.  Also our indexed pages against our submitted sitemap in webmaster tools is poor in ratio (6000 pages over 1000 indexed). Any help would be really really grateful. Kindest regards Mark

  • Is there a way I can search for top sites searched by a certain demographic group. For example if I searched for:  Women 60-70 the top search results would be 1. Menopause.com 2. Retirement.com etc. I want to make sure I'm interact with my customer base where they are searching and engaging the communities they find most interesting and important. I know I can search for demographic information about these specific groups, but I want to get results of top sites used by a certain age and gender. Similar to the way you can target demographic factors in Facebook advertising. Is there possibly some search operators I can use to return these type of results?

  • Hi guys / gals. This is quite rare for me because I normally can put together a good strategy based on the best articles / content etc I have read. However this time I am in a bit of a situation where I dont seem to be able to get results for my Google Local Listings or Google Plus Places page. The listing is good, has a description, images, url, address etc. The weakness was a lack of citations, so I got the White Spark Tool and went to work. I have probably built about 20 citations - all pretty good sites, nothing dodgy. The issue is my listing has gone the wrong way i.e. lost positions. What am I doing wrong here. Is 20 citations just not enough? Is there another ranking factor I am neglecting? I have digested this : http://www.davidmihm.com/local-search-ranking-factors.shtml Please advise peeps 🙂

  • Hi, I have question, which im not sure this problem caused by latest EMD or something other. Its more likely by EMD update, and i think the same, but to be sure that i`m right i want to ask. Example: We have Client which previous month(and as i remember always was) was #1 by brand keyword on Google.co.uk with URL that ends with .co.uk. What we see today that now it`s ranked on #2, on first place now our  US site with the same URL but ending with .com. So they switched positions. And the question is, can this situation caused by EMD update? To clarify US site is more popular, has about 6 times more external links than UK, Domain,  page authority and all other SEO things are higher. P.S Same situation i see only for 2 clients all other are as previous. Thanks, Sergey

  • Hi Guys, This is an interesting one. I've recently been looking into Bing and trying to get my company's website ranking for relevant search terms. So I typed in site:www.sparkstone.co.uk and was shocked when only 13 pages were returned. So I signed up to bing webmaster tools and started submitting URLs manually as well as a sitemap. However i've just gone back to check expecting to see more pages being indexed. Sadly only the homepage has been indexed. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, Dan

  • I use newswires to publish press releases or articles for clients. Almost all are published on one site such as PRWeb and picked up by newspapers/publishers. Each of these pieces reference the source as PRWeb (for example). Each press release is then added to the company website. Do I run the risk of search engines believing this to be plagiarised if not referenced to the 'original source' being PR Web? Thanks

  • I'm having a hard time finding the actual pros and cons of implementing Google Site Search on a website.  Thoughts?  Any data on bounce rate of internal SERP because UX doesn't look like the website? I know you can customize, but most examples I've seen still look pretty different from the stie's native style. Any other cons?  Data issues, etc?

  • Our competitor has alexa ranking 1329 in UK but we are only ranked 36,147 However, They are not ranking extremely well on google. Sometimes we rank higher than them on some of the keywords. Therefore they must have some good referral traffics from other websites. Is there any tool i can use to track what websites bring them traffics?

  • Last 3 years we created backlinks with 3 main anchors for our website.
Domain name example is www.jackusedcars.com , keywords: bmw , audi , mercedes. We have chosen some big keywords as our main keywords. And some more small search volume words: buy used cars, used cars sell off. 90% of backlinks are with main keywords. OSE:
     BMW          2,505      162,638
     audi            1,111      209,542
     mercedes  735         64,649
     used cars  382         28,368
     car sale      136         8,517
     toyota          108        13,106
     buy used car 34       820
     car sell off     28        710
     usedcars.com 26    45
sold cars       23        472 Website title example is: BMW Shop, buy Audi and Mercedes used cars 90% of backlinks are to index page. (Now we have Linking Root Domains 5,158; Total Links: 512k) all backlinks are related, we never used any auto spam tool etc.
in 2011, November 16-30th "audi" keyword traffic dropped, around -80%. Other keywords were ok.
We haven't been kicked by penguin in august 24. Graph was the same. Since November, our index page traffic dropped by 70%... 1st question: We got penalized for overoptimizing with "AUDI" keyword? Or its just another reason it stopped driving traffic? I know that for such linkbuilding we could get kicked by penguin on next update. So now we are de-optimizing the website, changing our old backlinks to different anchors and different urls (car pages - with car name anchors). We are quite good in the search results with product pages now. 1st page always - serp depends on the competition. For example "Used BMW 530 car for sale". We are creating new backlinks like this:
10% to index with different anchors - not the old big ones
20% to http://italian.jackusedcars.com with italian anchors
20% to http://www.jackusedcars.com/search/bmw530 with "buy bmw530", "bmw530 sale" and so on
50% to product names http://www.jackusedcars.com/BMW-530-i-x-2009-full-options.html with product name anchor We still want to get our traffic back with popular keywords. We have them written in title and keyword density on-page is 0.99% (previously was 1.37%).
Every month we lose around 10% of traffic to index page. We were with these keywords in top3, and now only 1 keyword is somewhere in top10, others are not even in top50. 2nd question: Should we remove "BMW, AUDI, Mercedes" from title? (they are still driving us around 20% traffic + 20% with bmw sub-keywords) We could lose almost 50% of total traffic. Only sub-pages will drive traffic with non-popular keywords. We have plans of making page www.jackusedcars.com/bmw and optimize it with "BMW" keyword. Could it go through?
Some old backlinks would be changed to this page.
Our best conversion is with these main keywords, so we really need to get them back. All comments are welcome. Graph attached. visitors_yearly.jpg

  • We are adding a JQuery smart search to our site that provides product suggestions as our visitors type. I can create a simple script to store precisely what the visitors are searching for and how they type it.  However... I am not sure how to best analyze the data for use.  Simply storing the data does not tell me how many times a particular phrase was used. I believe a smart suggestion search tool will skew my results, as it will suggest what I list my product names as in my database rather than what they call it. I don't want to reinvent the wheel.  I found a great JQuery script for the suggestion search, but is there anything out there for storing and analyzing the user search input?

  • Hi there, I have been optimizing my website for Google over the past year or so, and now have around 50 keywords or so, moderate/highly competitive keywords on page 1, however there are a few keywords which I have been trying to optimize for which I am finding it difficult getting these keywords onto page 1. However I just noticed through analytics that I am getting quite a bit of  traffic through Bing on these keywords, so I thought I would take a look to see where I was ranking for these keywords and to my surprise top 5 for which these keywords. So the question is, what does it take to rank high in Bing? as my results are so different when comparing my Google results to Bing. Thanks

  • I have noticed Google Merchant Center has been making many changes of over the last month. Feeds can now be optimized for certain product attributes. The dilemma currently is that I have a Google Merchant Center Data feed that shows zero warnings and that the data quality is good.  Unfortunately, the entire feed has been disapproved. Across many other websites that I noticed the same issues, I have been able to fix all warnings and the feeds are taken perfectly. This one sites issues are eluding me. Anybody have any suggestions or experience dealing with this problem? Possible issues I have looked into but could be affecting feed. Merchant Center Guidelines have been reviewed multiple, multiple times and here is what I have found. 1. Website has limited duplicate content taken from distributors product listings (I have fought a unending battle with site owner to make all product content original) 2. Refurbished Products Issue: The sites feed has listed all products as "new". I found some of the product content in the site had "refurbished" listed. The guidelines state that products must be listed & marked as refurbished in the feed. To overcome this issue I disabled all refurbished products and resubmitted the feed. This did produce a good approved data feed.

  • I'm looking into starting eCommerce retail shop, off the back of my salon's success. Yet I'm split into using a cart software on my excising domain or a multi-channel shopping software on a new .co.uk linked via the menu of my salon domain. Ideally i could proceed and use both domains for the one company just to clarify: my salon domain is uk targeted and is "www.Brand-Name.com" (with - seperating brand words) my proposed shop domain is uk targeted "www.BrandNameBeautyShop.com" Any ideas if it would hurt my campaign to do such a thing?

  • I am working on a website that is a manufacturing company selling items to companies in the United States, India and some other countries. I already know what keywords I would target in the US but what about India? In the US we optimize our keywords for the Google search engine but in India what search engine is the biggest. I know http://www.google.co.in/ exists but is that the most powerful (most users) for India? Is there a certain language I do research for keywords or should I stick to English keywords? Also if I rank for a national keyword (no location in the phrase) well in the US should it be similar for India?

  • Hey team, Just wondering if there's anyone out there that may have dabbled with YouTube closed captions and if having them has any effect at all on search results. My theory (unfounded) is that perhaps these files can be crawled (or viewed) by crawlers and/or given priority in search due to having indexible content which defines the content within the clip - which otherwise wouldn't have been known. Now, I have no evidence that this may be the case but wondering if anyone out there may have seen or read something about it. Seems like kind of a cool thing for SE's to do to help promote accessibility across teh web. Thanks guys.

  • Hi All... I know its important to get citations the same in terms of company name, address, phone number and URL but how dissimilar can they be before this causes problems with Google Places? One of my clients has citations with very minor differences to the correct address i.e.: 2a such and such a road when it should be: 2 such and such a road I cannot see duplicate listing for the company. Anyone got any ideas / experience of this? I don't want to suggest changing them all if its not nessasary? Cheers in advance. Justin

  • Hi i am working on my site which is a lifestyle magazine and i have been reading about using linking within your own website to help you climb up the search engines. Now i am trying to find out if this is correct information and if so which is the best way to use this. I have an example page below, as stated i am still working on the site and the site will still take me a few more weeks yet. http://www.in2town.co.uk/news/soap-gossip/eastenders-fans-not-happy-over-tanya-plot Now if it is correct that linking from within a site is a good way to climb the search engines, i would like to know how i would do it for this page. I am looking at climbing the search engines for soap gossip and celebrity news. I was thinking should i have a line at the bottom saying something like for all the latest celebrity news visit our site or something like this. any advice would be great

  • It appears that the site www.wilsonevergreens.com has all of the strengths in place but cannot get past the 'plateau' for ranking for 'christmas wreaths. I knew that Google put a strong emphasis on have the keyword in the TLD and this is where Wilson Evergreens is lacking so I considered a microsite to rank for the keyword phrase that will point to Wilson Evergreen's site. Examining the option of TLDs and using them show that pretty much the same sites show up in the results whether you use 'christmas wreaths' or 'wreaths for christmas'. According to Google AdWords External Keyword Tool both terms are searched for about equally. I did a search for purchasing the domain www.wreathsforchristmas.com and it was taken but the .net version was available. The site www.wreathsforchristmas.com does not even show up in the SERPs for 'wreaths for christmas'. However it is a poorly constructed site with almost no marketing so I can understand why. Quote from Rand Fishkin, "If you have an exact match domain name for a particular keyword you're targeting, microsites can be powerful. Google's preference for and ranking boost given to exact-match domains is a very powerful tool to use for SEO. " (from http://www.seomoz.org/blog/understanding-root-domains-subdomains-vs-subfolders-microsites) My question is do you think it is worth purchasing www.wreathsforchristmas.net to boost sales for www.wilsonevergreens.com?
