  • I own two domain names, smallbusinessdoer.com and smallbizdoer.com. I set up my site at smallbusinessdoer.com. Initially I wanted to keep the full "business" in the domain name as I thought it would be good for SEO. I'm now thinking it would be a lot better to have a shorter domain and I do own the smallbizdoer.com domain (which is currently forwarding to smallbusinessdoer.com). If I flip that around, forward smallbusinessdoer.com with a 301 redirect to smallbizdoer.com, what are the implications? How long will I lose link juice with the 301 redirects? Does shortening business to biz help for URL length or usability? Thanks for any input!

  • Hi guys, I am working on a recently rebuilt website, which has some duplicate content issues that are more nuanced than usual. I have a plan of action (which I will describe further), so please let me know if it's a valid plan or if I am missing something. Situation: The client is targeting two types of users: business leads (Type A) and potential employees (Type B), so for each of their 22 locations, they have 2 pages - one speaking to Type A and another to Type B. Type A location page contains a description of the location. In terms of importance, Type A location pages are secondary because to the Type A user, locations are not of primary importance. Type B location page contains the same description of the location plus additional lifestyle description. These pages carry more importance, since they are attempting to attract applicants to work in specific places. So I am planning to rank these pages eventually for a combination of Location Name + Keyword. Plan: New content is not an option at this point, so I am planning to set up canonical tags on both location Types and make Type B, the canonical URL, since it carries more importance and more SEO potential. The main nuance is that while Type A and Type B location pages contain some of the same content (about 75%-80%), they are not exactly the same. That is why I am not 100% sure that I should canonicalize them, but still most of the wording on the page is identical, so... Any professional opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • i'm trying to rank the site appliance-repair-ny.com for the New York City area. I managed to have the site rank pretty good (the site is less than 6 months old) for keyphrases with NYC, New York and Manhattan but i don't understand how to get the site rank higher for the ones without those keywords. For example: Appliance repair NYC - rank 1 Appliance Repair New york - rank 4 Appliance repair (without location) not in results Anyone can help me please? 🙂 Thanks!

  • Yes, that's what I'm working on now. As you might already know / have guessed, gambling is not a really well regarded source of enterntainment amongst... well, amongst 90% of the world popppulitaion, yet there is a huge market for both online casinos and affiliate sites. I believe it to be the second biggest internet market after porn, so, yes, we live in a weird world. Honest linkbuilding is almost impossible, there's really few people that would dare to post an entry on their reputated blog of the "check this out, my friend's new casino site" kind, neither placing on their site a nicely anchored back-link. We also do CMS web-development, but, of course, not a single client has accepted to keep a link to our casino site in their footer. We have tried some link-baiting technics with interesting content by sending it to news aggregators, but most of the feedback we get (after the users read our url) is of the: "gonna downvote the h*** out of you lousy spammer!" kind. Our site doesn't look dodgy at all, we intended to get rid of the sordid look that most affiliate sites sport, and I think that we succeded. (Here it is, if you guys wanna take a look http://www.ilovecasino.es/ ). So here we are, out in the cold, developing our own "satellite sites", working hard in the seo for all of our other sites, giving away free drupal templates that carry an uncloacked link to us in the footer... all the classics. So, any nice feedback on how to get sweet white-hat links in such a complicated market will be strongly appreciated. Hope you can pardon both my rather long question and pretty poor english 🙂

  • Hey all. Here's the scenario.  I have this pretty trusted site with a relatively high PR.  The navigation menu has around 300 links.  But this is because it is a CSS menu that drills down into subcategories. Now, would restricting the amount of links in this menu be beneficial?  I am not worried about any subcategory pages not being crawled or indexed, but I am concerned that subcategory pages will not receive as high of PageRank if they are not linked to directly from the home page, thereby lowering the ranking potential.  Even with new pages that are created they receive a PR of 5 if linked to from the home page. But I'm also thinking that toning down the menu size would be beneficial by funneling more PageRank to category pages and increasing the likelihood of ranking for some core head/middle terms. I have seen sites that externalize the menu in JavaScript files and disallow it in Robots.txt to prevent too much PageRank from linking out, but SEO isn't really a one-solution-fits-all in my experience. I may try a test.  Externalizing the menu may also increase the relevance for pages because I won't have a bunch of other content on the page not relevant to that page's specific keywords. Anyone with experience in this arena?  I would love to hear your input. Thanks

  • I am trying to manage DSEO for a client. The question is: would blocking a page listing from my client's Google Sitelinks cause that blocked sitelink page to be independently listed in the rankings and therefore potentially stuff a negative listing further down the rankings? Or would the blocked sitelink not show up at all in the SERPs

  • Hi guys - I have a client who are recently experiencing a great deal of more traffic to their site. As a result, their web development agency have given them a server upgrade to cope with the new demand. One thing they have also done is put all website scripts, CSS files, images, downloadable content (such as PDFs) - onto a 3rd party server (Amazon S3). Apparently this was done so that my clients server just handles the page requests now - and all other elements are then grabbed from the Amazon s3 server. So basically, this means any HTML content and web pages are still hosted through my clients domain - but all other content is accessible through an Amazon s3 server URL. I'm wondering what SEO implications this will have for my clients domain? While all pages and HTML content is still accessible thorugh their domain name, each page is of course now making many server calls to the Amazon s3 server through external URLs (s3.amazonaws.com). I imagine this will mean any elements sitting on the Amazon S3 server can no longer contribute value to the clients SEO profile - because that actual content is not physically part of their domain anymore. However what I am more concerned about is whether all of these external server calls are going to have a negative effect on the web pages value overall. Should I be advising my client to ensure all site elements are hosted on their own server, and therefore all elements are accessible through their domain? Hope this makes sense (I'm not the best at explaining things!)

  • I recently checked rank-tracking of a client's search-phrases. In Google UK variations of 2 almost identical search phrases dropped 30 places for one of these and jumped 30 places for the other. The only difference between the 2 phrases being the site's location (city) was placed first in phrase A and last in Phrase B. There were no technical or content changes on-site- How can this be?

  • Hi, We have a customer with a website in EN, FR and ES. They used Joomfish, so each language is in a subdirectory : sitename/en sitename/fr sitename/es and they want their website to be well placed on the web for all that languages and countries: English, French, Spanish, German and Italian. It is a website for specific affiliation, that's why there is no barriers. What I need to do to use the best way SEOmoz. For the moment I created one campaign following Google US, google Germany and Google France. To go deeper, I would need to create different campaigns in my account? And also, your robot will be able to recognize the different subdirectories and languages? And to improve the SEO of this website, it wouldn't be better to have 3 domains name, one for each country?   • Our site has the largest selection of dog clothes on the Internet. We're been (every so slowly) creeping up in the rankings for the "dog clothes" term, but for some reason only rank for our home page. Even though the home page (and every page on the domain) has links pointing to our specific Dog Clothes page, that page doesn't even rank anywhere when searching Google with "dog clothes site:baxterboo.com". http://www.google.com/webhp?source=hp&q=dog+clothes+site:baxterboo.com&#sclient=psy&hl=en&site=webhp&source=hp&q=dog+clothes+site:baxterboo.com&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=dog+clothes+site:baxterboo.com&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=f4efcaa1b8c328f Pages 2+ of product results from that page rank, but not the base page. It's not excluded in robots.txt, All on site links to that page use the same URL. That page is loaded with more text that includes the keywords. I don't believe there's duplicated content. What am I missing? Has the page somehow been penalized?

  • Hey, really need some help deciding what to do... I have a .co.uk site, its my oldest and best site of my network and accounts for maybe 30-40% of my income. Although its a .co.uk site, it actually makes most of its from from USA traffic and targets many terms for the US market - but the problem is that due to it being a .co.uk it doesnt rank as well in G .com and over the last few years Google has defiantly widened the gap as such for the ability for a .co.uk to rank in G .com. Many terms that I used to be #1 for in G .com, I now rank position 5-10 only, but in G .co.uk I'm #1 and often with a duo listing so I wouldnt put the loss of rankings in G .com down to just losing rankings naturally. Now many of my key pages are gradually losing rankings in G .com which is not good and really frustrating Feedback Needed So my dilemma is do I risk my best site and 301 it to a .com hosted in the US for potential at a guess 50% increase in revenues and more future potential (If the 301 worked well and got some US rankings back - Im sure longtail would increase lots too) ? If people with experience with 301ing sites to a new domain could let me know how they did or if you're an SEO and have done this many times, how many times on average has Serps remained stable / unchanged ? Trying to work out the reward to risk ratio, like on average if the transition is seamless 90% of the time it would seem worth the gamble, but if its 50% then I would say its not worth it.

  • Hi, In the Netherlands, the SEO competition for terms like loans is very competitive. I see a website in this industry that seems to be doing very well based on links with good anchor text from sites that seem quite worthless to me, such as: http://www.online-colleges-helper.com/ and http://www.alohapath.com/ My question is: is it worth pursuing this type of links? I assume these must be paid links, or am I wrong? I'd really rather not go down this route but I don't want to be outranked by someone who is using these types of links...   • Hi, looking for some advice on the structure for a relatively small site (around 200 pages). I'd like a structure where we can talk about our services as well as write blog articles on topics that relate to our services. We'll have loads more content in the blog area than in the services area. I was thinking of this: option 1: /services /services/copywriting
    /services/social-media
    /services/press-releases etc. and categories for articles where we'd give tips, talk about trends etc. /copywriting
    /social-media
    /effective-press-releases
    etc. would it be better to have a different structure, say: option 2: /copywriting
    /copywriting/services
    /copywriting/articles OR option 3: /copywriting-services
    /copywriting-blog OR option 4: /services/copywriting
    /blog/copywriting OR is there another, better way perhaps? Of course the internal anchor text links to the services/blog articles pages will be tuned to try and make it clear what each section is about i.e. our services vs. industry trends/comments/tips for the blog.

  • I noticed on a site that ranks above me for 'keyphrase" that they have two similar tags in their area: <title>keyphrase</title> I've used the first (<title>) on all my pages. I've not used the 2nd at all. Should I? I'm trying to optimize mostly for Google.   • I've just had a look at the crawl diagnostics and my site comes up with duplicate page content and duplicate titles. I noticed that the url all has %5C at the end which I've never seen before. Does anybody know what that means?

  • I've built a couple of small tools that I use personally, maybe 2 or 3 times per day. Both tools scrape the top 10 results from Google and provide more details about each domain (like the SEOMoz Keyword Difficulty Tool). Google seem to have banned my IP address for automated searches... can anyone tell me a safe way of scraping the google results? Is there a suitable API for this? How do SEO Moz do this on such a huge scale?

  • Bit of an unusual one for me - appreciate your thoughts... I did an SEO audit for a potential client last week and discovered that 3 of their top 10 strongest inbound links (reported from OSE) are blatantly paid links from those "Link Bid Directories". The links were created mid-last year, so reasonably recent. Strange thing is that they have been using a highly reputable SEO agency for several years who do NOT engage in link buying - so I'm pretty sure it is not their SEO agency buying these links. Also - the link anchor texts are the company name - not a target keyword - so I suspect they either: a) have someone internally in the company who thinks they are "helping" by buying links - or, b) in my most paranoid fantasies, a competitor is setting them up for a Google smack (very long bow, I know!) Anyway my questions are: If I decide to take on this client, should I DO anything about these links? These link are almost certainly currently "working" to pass link juice and I don't believe the site has been penalised (yet!) for them. I suspect when these links are switched off, the site will drop in rankings so my thoughts are to just ignore them and proceed with a normal link building campaign in the hope that if (when) the links are killed we will be OK. Is there a "safe" way to report them to Google? By which I mean, let Google know to ignore these links and NOT penalise US for them being there. Is there a way to get the links removed given that we don't control the accounts that created them? Oh - and feel free to comment on my paranoid fantasies 🙂 Have you ever seen paid links appear that you KNOW didn't come from you? Thanks! Steve

  • Hello, I am currently number 1 for a competitive keyword - so don't want to push the wrong button and self destruct! My site is highly focused on one relatively narrow niche with about 50-60 pages of content bang on topic. I was wondering if Google will discredit my site in any way if I start adding pages that are** 'loosely related' **to the overall theme of my niche. Some of them are what you might call sister concepts with maybe one mention of my target keyword in the body..... Does the algo value what percentage of the whole site's content is on/ off topic? If so how important is this as a factor? Thanks a lot

  • Hi - I run a hobby related niche new / article / resource site (http://tinyurl.com/4eavaj4). One of the most critical components of the site is our product database. We don't actually sell anything directly - instead we monetize them by displaying relevant affiliate product feeds and price comparisons. However since the Panda update was implemented in February my traffic (particularly my long tail, product related traffic) has dropped off considerably. I had about a 20% drop in overall traffic, but have made up some of the ground in the past week.  However I want to know once and for all how I should structure my product related information as I have a ton of great content that is ready to be published in this section but want to be sure I structure it the best possible way from a SEO standpoint. Here are a few different options I've come up with for displaying information about products on my site. For the purpose of these examples I am going to refer to all of the information that makes up my product pages collectively as "product profiles". Please let me know which is the best SEO wise (or if you have a better way of doing it let me know): - Option 1 - Current Method - Divide Content Sections into different pages / urls Example: http://tinyurl.com/4tpdlbl This is how the majority of my product profiles are currently structured. I did this to improve load times and to keep the total number of links per page down. In addition to the core product profile subpages: "Product Details","Compare Prices", **"**Product Review", "Hot Auctions", and "Checklists", I have the Checklists area further segmented by subset, each of which is on its own page that is only accessible through the main Checklists tab of the profile. - Option 2 - Everything on one url / page the old fashioned way, with everything available by scrolling vertically. This would make the page go on forever though. - Option 3 - Everything on one url / page, but visually segmented using css / javascript tabs. Example: http://tinyurl.com/4kqhauh I looked at the source code and all the page text is there, so it looks like it would be spider-able but you tell me. Or would another method of tabbing be better? My site is wordpress based so the functionality comes from a plugin. - Option 4 - Use post tabs that are technically all on the same page, but make each individual tab be accessible through its own suburl, all of which share the same core canonical url. Example: http://tinyurl.com/4bs9pjs Clicking on any of the individual tabs will result in something like ?postTabs=2 being appended to the core url.  Example: http://tinyurl.com/4gvgufc Any input would be greatly appreciated asap!   • Hi all, One of my sites http://www.nieuwsspion.nl lost it's rankings on December 15th last year. eg a search for "nieuwspion" shows the site at about #75 I can't figure out what could be wrong... no paid links, it's not the farmer/panda algo wich came up only this year... G.webmastertools is saying: i get 18.052 links from zappen.blog.nl (anchor "nieuwsspion" to a sub-page) and 7.910 links from linkspagina.eu but i don't see those in Open Site Explorer, and they shouldn't harm me as far as i understand? Any input very much appreciated, Elgoog

  • Hi guys, I hope somebody can help me figure this out. On one of my sites I set the charset to UTF-8 in the content-type meta-tag. The file itself is also UTF-8. If I type german special chars like ä, ö, ß and the like they get displayed as a tilted square with a questionmark inside. If I change the charset to iso-8859-1 they are getting displayed properly in the browser but services like twitter are still having the issues and stop "importing" content once they reach one of those specialchars. I would like to avoid having to htmlencode all on-page content, so my preference would be using UTF-8.. You can see it in action when you visit this URL for example: http://www.skgbickenbach.de/aktive/1b/artikel/40-minuten-fußball-reichen-nicht_1045?charset=utf-8 Remove the ?charset parameter and the charset it set to iso-8859-1.   • I work for a number of clients on linkbuilding campaigns, and I follow and recommend to clients a white hat "quality" linkbuilding approach. This has achieved great results for my clients but I often get questions such as. Q. What is better for us - £100 for a mozrank 4 placement vs £200 for a mozrank 5 placement? I am trying to build a numeric way of showing cost of placing a link (via article mainly) vs the mozrank / authority of the site its placed on. The key to working this out though is knowing how much more value there is between the different quality of sites, and what are the key factors to build into the formula. Ideally the output we will get is a linkbuilding effect cost which shows the cost per impact of a placement. A highly simplified formula (that wouldn't work)  therefore would be Cost / mozrank If we look at mozrank being 8 times higher between levels, how does this correlate with the value of the link from sites at those different levels? We know that we will never have a correct formula for this but we are striving to get a formula which helps us to plan and evaluate different site opportunities at different costs. I would love to know anybody’s thoughts on this, Thanks

  • My site has a Google penalty. I seem to be stuck in the 64th position for a Google search for my sites name. All my keywords that I used to rank well for are now well above the 60th search place in Google. I have resolved the issue I recieved the penalty for and I have asked Google for reconsideration. That has been about 3 months ago.  The penalty is still firmly in place. I was wondering if anyone else has had a Google algorithmic penalty removed and if so how did they accomplish this?

  • Hi everyone, I'm currently using the trial of seomoz and I absolutely love what I'm seeing.  However, I have 2 different websites (one has over 10,000 pages and one has about 40 pages).  I've noticed that the smaller website is crawled every few days.  However, the larger site hasn't been crawled in a few days.  Although both campaigns state that the sites won't be crawled until next Monday, is there any way to get the crawl to start sooner on the large site? The reason that I've asked is that I've implemented some changes that will likely decrease the amount of pages that are crawled simply based upon the recommendations on this site.  So, I'm excited to see the potential changes.   • I've done all of my keyword research, and now I'm selecting the KW's. In a previous question, seomoz had answered to pick a mix of easy, medium, and difficult words to rank for. How do I know which are easy, medium, difficult? The KW Difficulty Tool is not very specific. Is the level of difficulty related to where the phrase pops up for my company in search results? Are hard words ones that you do not already rank in the top 50 search results? When selecting KWs should I choose words that rank already in the top 50 that I'd like to try to move up? Or look for NEW phrases/words not in the top 50 results? Also, when entering KW phrases int the KW Difficulty Tool, Rank Tracker, and in Campaigns - do I need to use quotation marks if it is a phrase? I noticed that the KW difficulty tool has different results if you use quotation marks. Lastly, The person who did SEO before me has a list of KWs he optimized for, would it be valuable for me to include his words in my On-Page optimization efforts?

  • I apologize for the lengthy post, but I need help! Here is my current structure for product reviews: My product pages displays a set number of user product reviews before displaying a link to "see all reviews". So: http://www.domain.com/product/product-page Has product details, specs (usually generic from manufacturer) and 5 user product reviews. If there are more than 5, there is a link to see all reviews: http://www.domain.com/reviews/product-page?page=1 Where each page would display 10 user product reviews, and paginate until all user reviews are displayed. I am thinking about using the Rel Canonical tag on the paginated reviews pages to reference back to the main product page.   • If someone formats a link like so: http://www.somedomain.com/keyword1-keyword2/keyword3.php Would you still get a similar anchor text benefit to this link as if it was formated like so: somedomain keyword1 keyword2 keyword3 what i mean is, does google extract out keywords from links that use the url as the anchortext?

  • Beloved community: I'm about to optimize a reasonably large website that has been developed with ASP.NET. My crawl diagnostics do not paint a pretty picture: overly dynamic URLs, loads of duplicate content, and 302 temporary redirects. I found a helpful IIS extension on Scott Guthrie's blog that eliminates a lot of of the above issues. But looking ahead, I need a solution for creating a "category" organized, flat site architecture. What steps should I take with my development team in order to implement a site architecture that is highly-crawlable and user-friendly? Any ASP.NET gurus out there? Thanks in advance!

  • Hello everyone, my first post - ahhh I'm investigating a niche and there is a site that should have no right being there in my view. It's no. 3 Google UK for 'company formation' with a small site with 65 weak links from only 7 domains and hosted in the US. But more importantly, the Open Site Explorer says there is not 1 link with that term in its anchor text.  This I find crazy and makes me suspicious. But before I go back to my client saying "oh they must be black hat" I would like your expert views.  I'm not sure whether to tut or congratulate them and for the first time I'm not sure what reasons to give for their amazing performance! What's your views?

  • We have a site that has a ridiculous number of pages. Its a directory of service providers that is organized by city and sub-category of the vertical. Each provider is on the main city page, then when you click on a category, it will only show those folks who offer that subcategory of this service. example: colorado/denver - main city page colorado/denver/subcat1 - subcategory page There are 37 subcategories. So, 38 pages that essentially have the same content - minus a provider or two - for each city. There are approx 40K locations in our database. So rough math puts us at 1.5 million results pages, with 97% of those pages being duplicate content! This is clearly a problem. But many of these obscure pages do rank and get traffic. A fair amount when you aggregate all these pages together. We are about to go through a redesign and want to consolidate pages so we can reduce the dupe content, get crawl budget allocated to more meaningful pages, etc. Here's what I'm thinking we should do with this site, and I would love to have your input: Canonicalize Before the redesign use the canonical tag on all the sub-category pages and push all the value from those pages (colorado/denver/subcat1, /subcat2, /subcat3... etc) to the main city page (colorado/denver/subcat1) 301 Redirect On the new site (we're moving to a new CMS) we don't publish the duplicate sub-category pages and do 301 redirects from the sub-category URLs to the main city page urls. We'd still have the sub-categories (keywords) on-page and use some Javascript filtering to narrow results. We could cut to the chase and just do the redirects, but would like to use canonicalization as a proof of concept internally at my company that getting rid of these pages is a good thing, or at least wont have a negative impact on traffic. i.e. by the time we are ready to relaunch traffic and value has been transfered to the /state/city page Trying to create the right plan and build my argument. Any feedback you have will help.
