When dealing with client recommendations for design, usability, and accessibility, we always stress the importance of a custom 404 page. Why? Because I think everyone gets a little sick of seeing standard pages that do little to direct users toward a useful solution. These boring, default 404s are not friendly, they're hostile. And without the proper presentation they risk scaring away less savvy ...

It's been several months since we launched the 2006 Web 2.0 Awards, but the buzz is still going strong. Later tonight I'm meeting with one of the companies we reviewed. Then, next Wednesday I'm off to Amsterdam for The Next Web Conference, where speakers including Kevin Kelley (of Wired Magazine), Michael Arrington (of TechCrunch), and Kevin Rose (of Digg) will address the way Web 2.0 is changing the way people use the internet.

I was watching "That 70s Show" last night (yes, Rand, I was only pretending to watch the Seahawks game) when something caught my eye in a Pontiac commercial. I usually ignore TV ads unless they're during the Superbowl, as they more often than not serve to annoy me, but suddenly, in the middle of a Pontiac ad, was the Google search page and the announcer was crooning,
"Don't take our word for it, Google "Pontiac" to find out!"
