Learning a Little About Email Marketing

Learning a Little About Email Marketing

I don't know a whole lot about email marketing, but I enjoy studying the marketing emails I receive and identifying the ones that are more effective than others. I talked to Scott, who handles our email marketing campaigns, and he praises email marketing for being "dirt cheap and very effective." I can agree on the cheap part: we use Exact Target, whose suite of email marketing solutions start at $1,000 per year for one user and go up to an Enterprise account ($15,000 a year for five users). While there are expensive email marketing packages available, you can definitely find an affordable option to start out with and get your feet wet.

A Challenge To Grow SEOmoz

I come from an Online Business background. I had a business that sold a product nationwide, before the internet. I know that makes me a dinosaur compared to some of you. But I have been working at finding the answers to high natural search rankings since the net went public. So how come I’m not one of the SEO giants? I wasn’t trying to do this for every...

Advanced Analytics: Cross-Campaign, Channel and Media Tracking

Display advertising intrigues me - the best bits have the capacity to inspire, but measuring their success can be harder. One of the best sessions I attended at SMX Advanced back in the summer was the advanced analytics panel. It covered some fantastic tips on advanced methodologies and metrics for search analytics. It was the inspiration for this post, which is going to cover some slightly different areas. Although we primarily deal with SEO and search advertising, we do a little online display advertising and have recently found ourselves thinking about measurement metrics for PR and offline advertising:

SEO: A Process of Episodic or Continuous Change?

When you are through changing, you are through. ~Bruce Barton Within the (organizational) change literature there is a distinction between change that is episodic and change that is continuous. Even though both types of change may seem fairly identical to the unknowing observer, there are structural differences between them. When examined up close, it becomes clear that episodic change is discontinuous and intermittent, while continuous change is evolving and incremental.

Why New Content Briefly Flickers Out Of Google

A few days after new content shows up in Google, it will sometimes flicker out of the SERPS for a few hours. Apparently, this is common knowledge to some SEOs. This is not common knowledge to programmers like me, and I nearly made a tin foil hat in preparation for the googlicopters when I learned the project (Linkscape) that I'd worked on for months had disappeared from all SERPs on th...

Rock Climbing and SEO

First of all, this is my first post and I hope my English won't be too bad (I'm a French Canadian but I did my best). Enjoy! ------------------------------------------------- This weekend, I participated in an indoor rock climbing competition. For those who don't know how indoor rock climbing competitions are processed, it's not a race as the majority may think. Rock climbing is an individual sport focusing on the objective of surpassing ourselves to always become stronger to be able to do things that are more difficult. In competitions, routes are very difficult, so the goal is not to climb to the top as fast as possible, but to try to get as near as possible of the top. The routes are made to be difficult enough so the competitors usually fall before they reach the top.

Elements of a Great Website

Elements of a Great Website

Plenty of big companies have Flash websites, you might think, so why not yours? The answer is simple. Complicated Flash websites won't help you sell anything. Think back to the animated sites you've seen in the past. They might look nice, but they load slowly, especially for users on slow connections. They can also be awkward to navigate, and they make it difficult for users to bookmark specific pages they'd like to return to. If the purpose of your website is to function like a television commercial, then make is as flashy as you want. Lexus, for example, doesn't sell cars from their website and most of the people who visit their website already know the Lexus brand; therefore, they do not care about a good search engine ranking. People know if they want to find out about Lexus, they can go to www.lexus.com. If your goal for your website is to be listed on the first page of Google, market and sell products, and take money from your customers, you will need a simple and easy to understand design that is search engine friendly.

Pre-Weekend Roundup for the Week of 10/12/08

Since I've caught the awesome cold that's been running rampant through our office, I was unable to publish the roundup yesterday. As such, I'm publishing it today as a temporary "Pre-Weekend Roundup." Now you'll have something fun to read on your lazy Saturday morning! Aren't I thoughtful... Stories, news, and other notable items from the past week: * TechRadar has a list of 20 websites that changed the world and revolutionized the way we lead our lives. The first ever website went online August 6, 1991, which was my 8th birthday. That's one hell of a birthday gift!

Nofollow Put My Kids Through College!

For ages I was on the boat with SEOs who moan about the stupidity of nofollow. But recently I've moved away from this school of thought. Now I definitely haven't moved to the side of the fence that sides with Google in saying that nofollow either a) cuts down on comment spam, or b) improves the quality of search results.

The Nature of Online Communities

So this weekend I had a bit of free time so I decided to learn how to play go (narrowly beating chess I might add). Now as anyone who's familiar with go will know, it will probably take me more than a weekend to learn how to play but still, you have to start somewhere right!? Of course, being an internet junkie one of the first things I did was Google around to find some information online about g...
