Category: Link Building

Chat through link building best practices and outreach techniques.

  • Hi there 🙂 I have been working at SEO for quite some time and I am such a noob. I have even done an online course. I am at my wits end. My website is https://www.urbani.com.au. I changed to https about 1 month ago. I want to rank for "outdoor furniture perth". Recently my homepage has stopped ranking for this keyword, and a useless blog page started ranking instead (www.urbani.com.au/tag/outdoor-furniture-perth/), on page 5 of google. I got rid of that page and redirected it to my homepage. Do you know what the problem is? Why won't google rank my homepage for "outdoor furniture perth"? It is ranking for "outdoor wicker furniture perth", but for "outdoor furniture perth" it has disappeared from the face of this earth. Thank you so much, if I can get help for this it would save my business! Whitney

  • And what about other sites like quora or other niche forums/blogs where one might leave answers, with a link to their profile, which has a link back to the owner's website? _Cindy

  • From casual observation, I believe that affiliate links to Amazon product pages, move those Amazon pages up in the SERPs. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? Philosophically, I think that affiliate links should not be counted in the rankings, even if they have not been nofollowed.  I  think that Google and other search engines should be filtering these links because they are compensated. Thanks for your thoughts.

  • So it appears AOL have pulled the plug on DMOZ.  The reason why? - I suspect a financial decision somewhere along the road but personally I think it still had something to offer.   I realise there are mirrored versions of it online still (for how long - and for what reason - not much link juice in that) but to pull the plug on one of the oldest and most trusted directories is, well, rather final. Amongst the rubble that litters the web - the endless paid entry directories and the self proclaimed ultimate listing portals I at least felt there was someone else out there (human) validating my submissions - even if it took some time to find my newest sites online.  We all know that links need to be adequately sourced but it was a resource I always began with on the quest in achieving ranking greatness. Which begs the question - was it still as popular in the last couple of years or have I been chasing my own tail?
Will it be replaced?  Or have even human edited directories had their day? I'd be interested to hear what others think. RIP DMOZ

  • So, I'm running competitor websites through Open Site Explorer and following the link from Moz to where their link is coming from. It has the anchor text 'Christmas Gifts'. When I go to that page there is no mention of this anchor text. No mention of that persons website. No display ad's that could be providing that link. How is this link pointing to their page?

  • Looking at different backlinks of my competitors and came across a few directories that require a 1 time payment for the year.  Is this considered the same as paying for a link or would this be considered something like getting a listing on your local Chamber of Commerce site? Also, I put the site through Moz's Open Site Explorer and it had PA:22 and DA:20, which is nothing incredible, but also had a spam score of 2. So would a site like this hurt my rankings? I know that's a good spam score, so I am a little confused with what to do. Here is the site: http://scl-online.net/en.htm Thanks for any help! Love this site.

  • Hi there, I saw a notable difference between the number of backlinks from ref domains to my website in search console and majestic. I basically have two questions: why such a difference? And which tool gives me the most accurate number between these two? Thank you!

  • I did a test recently with a sponsored article for some of my products, including my most popular product (https://www.spaceanswers.com/sponsored/sponsored-wear-a-piece-of-the-universe-with-the-space-collectives-meteorite-jewellery/) and it just so happens that recently this very product dropped from 2nd position to 51+, I have since managed to restore it to 6th position but I am wondering if this article is damaging my efforts? SEMrush is showing a page score of 4/100 and a trust score of 3/100, which is obviously very low. Is this helping or hurting my SEO?

  • Just to give you a bit of background - we are going out of our way to get bloggers to talk about and link (we are not paying for them) to our products.  We recently noticed that a number of these bloggers have signed up to skimlinks and are using shortened URL's (fave.co/12345) and are no-following these (is this correct procedure?). It's a little awkward, as it's devaluing our PR teams work, as we aren't able to see the sites generating revenue, GA simply shows the affiliate number (skimlinks) and that's it. has anyone else had similar issues with skimlinks and if so how did you deal with them?  Are the links they are "hijacking" harmful to our site?

  • Hi, I'm just looking to get some opinions on resource-page linkbuilding. These are links you would gain from sites when you use the following type of search operators: "keyword" + inurl:links
    "keyword" + inurl:resources
    "keyword" + "helpful links"
... and so on... What do you think Google's thoughts on this subject would be when a large portion of the pages returned are long lists of links - usually these will be the title of the page linked to as well as either a bare link or an anchor text link. In some instances a short description of the page linked to would also be there. Are these long-term links that will continue to be relevant and worth spending time on for linkbuilding, or are these going to be see by Google as lower-quality links and potentially unnatural ? For example, Google's page on link schemes states; "Low-quality directory or bookmark site links" may violate their guidelines. Do you think that in some cases, resource pages may be seen as somewhat fitting this description? Thanks! [Edit] I have also found this comment from a Moz post 4 years ago, but cannot find any other reference to John commenting on resource pages: "A while back, someone asked John Mueller in a hangout about the benefits of getting a link on an outdated resource page and the answer was that if it is a link that never gets clicked on then it's probably not passing a lot of value."

  • Hi Moz Community, We were previously doing Content services and Design services. Now, we are only into design service and we have deleted all content services related pages. Our website has many inbound links coming because of the content services pages but they are not relevant to our present service anymore. Will this affect our credibility on google and other search engines? We have applied 410 code to many of these old pages. We have also redirected some of them to the wayback pages. However, they still appear as one of the popular pages. Is there any solution for this? What can we do to do away with many of these inbound links coming to our website which are not relevant anymore to our current service? Your advice is so much appreciated. Thanks!

  • For many months I have been following this strategy of hiring high domain authority bloggers to review my products and link back to my website. For a month or two my rankings improved but now I suddenly lost rankings. Can Google penalize me for hiring bloggers to review my products? Bloggers do mention in the blog that the product was requested for editorial review. Any tips will be helpful. Regards

  • http://www.electricianinperth.com.au is one site that me and my colleagues are constantly struggling with. It has a page rank of 5 which beats a majority of the competitors, but when it comes to Google Australia searches such as Perth Electrician and Electrician Perth etc etc, we just can't seem to get there and the rankings keep fluctuating and dropping. We backlink and update the pages on a regular basis Any ideas? - Could it be the custom Wordpress/CMS system?

It seems you can post press releases about hospitality stuff on this site, and found some with abcdefg.hotel-online.com was wondering if I should disavow them? I tried a google search for these, and none of them have a bad spam score according to moz, but also SEMrush with a low toxic score. These came up doing an semrush backlink crawl, but not a moz backlink crawl. Would it be okay to disavow these?

  • Recently, I wrote a Moz post on what I think comprises effective online marketing outreach via email: Why You Should Steal My Daughter's Playbook for Effective Email Outreach Though I'm by no means an outreach expert, it's a topic I do feel qualified to talk about, owing to having worked with numerous PR/Outreach folks, seeing what works and what does not, and because of my experience working for and with Fortune 25s in a sales, outreach capacity. I'm wondering... What's the biggest challenge you've faced with regard to outreach? How are you addressing it? What's the No. 1 tactic you've used to attain success in email outreach? RS

  • Reviewing a list of links from webmaster console for a client and there are links to their website which render a page but there' s no mention of the clients website on that page. Why does this happen? Why is Google thinking that there is a link to the clients website yet on the page there is no mention of that clients website. There's no comments etc. I don't understand this and if anyone can shed a light??

  • I have an insurance agency, and recently set up a new site, specifically for personal lines insurance. My question is; Is it worth trying to rank this site, by using backlinks and unique content? It will have the same address, and location as my main site. I'm also concerned Google may frown on that.. Any input appreciated.

  • Hey gang. So I am a writer/amateur SEO/outreach guy for my agency. We have a client that fixes garage doors only in the the city of Portland Oregon. I wrote him a blog (this is not the real title) Called 5 ways to fix my garage door fast. It is doing pretty well and getting over a thousand visitors a month. But we all know that people coming to that blog could be from anywhere in the world, and most likely are not going to purchase garage door repair service from my client. We all know that. And that's why the page has a 98% bounce rate, but an overall good time on page. My superior sat me down and told me that I have to stop writing content like this, because all the content we write should be location focused. He said having a high bounce rate like that is actually bad for the site and is not helping at all. What do you guys think? Is he spot on? Thank you!

  • Is link juice passed from a website that has been intentionally de-indexed by webmaster? The scenario is I had 2 websites with similar content. I decided to get rid of one by de-indexing. I also did a 301redirect from my de-indexed site. Not the whole domain but just the 2 URL's which I believe could pass on link juice. In this case how long the link juice would flow via 301 redirect?

  • Our website is active in many countries and we are considering if it is worth it to switch from ccTLD to subdomains. The reason is that our company.com domain has a domain authority of 65 and some of the ccTLD's like company.fr and company.de etc have a domain authority of 30. From what I have read, moving these to a subdomain structure like fr.company.com and de.company.com will give them all the same domain authority (of 65 vs 30) which is considerably higher. 1. Would a subdomain with domain authority 65 rank better than a ccTLD with authority 30 (considering all else is the same)? 2. When we 301 redirect all ccTLD's to the subdomains, will our domain authority increase (to more than 65) for company.com, given that it can benefit from all redirected links to our ccTLD's? Thanks in advance!

  • We've recently taken on a new client that has a very large Disavow file.  I'm wondering if any good backlinks are being disavowed in the list and want to do an audit but wondered if there was a tool I could use that could give me some high level stats on each of the domains in the Disavow? Ideally, I'd love to be able to drop a list of domains into a tool that can tell me PR, DA, Spam Score, Citation Flow, Trust Flow in an exportable table. Does such a tool exist?

  • Hi,
I've ran a back link check and discovered a good back link to a site which then gets redirected back to my company's website. I have a feeling that an old SEO agency has purchased a small website which has a decent link back from a relevant organisation with a high Domain authority and then redirects the domain to our website to get the link juice. What are your thought on this? Is this really bad practise and possibly damaging? Thanks, Jim

  • I have an idea that might help people evaluate casually the strength of backlinks. I'm thinking of building an upvoting list of backlink pages. People can vote on how they feel the strength of the backlink site has personally helped them. This would not be algorithmic or scientific, just a community of people rating their actual success with the strength of the backlinks for particular sites. Thoughts? Thanks!

  • I run a very niche blog on getting section 8 housing. I've had the blog for about 6 years and have paid attention to it on and off. For the past few months, I've been ON again. What's appealing to me is the amount of potential traffic the keywords have and small competition. I have knowledge on the subject. I've read Moz seo guides, etc... The problem is government sites rank high (understandably) or other sites that are nonsense / scams when you search 'section 8 application'. It's very hard to find active bloggers to do link exchange is with as the sites that rank high are trying to scam people and obviously I can't get government back links. I've tried reaching out to people with no avail. I think I have good informative content. All of my adsense goes to charity but at this point it's not much. I'd like to get it out there, white-hat style, but I'm having difficulty. Any suggestions (please be specific), on how I can target sites that would be relevant to this topic and not do generic back-linking (unless you think news submissions, etc will work)? Thanks!

  • Doing a small SEO project for a local dermatologist and when reviewing competitor link profiles I found one site that was earning a TON of links from other doctors throughout the country. From what I can tell, it looks like this web development company builds medical practice sites, then puts a page on each site that links to all other practices they created site for. Does this actually work? What would the name of this be? Recipricol links? Link farm? http://www.raleighsportsmed.com/ypo-showcase.php Thanks! Ricky

  • In light of the Penguin update a few months back, are you still disavowing links? Penguin is meant to now ignore spammy links, meaning that manual disavow via Search Console is not needed. However, the feature stills remains in Search Console, suggesting that it is still helpful (or have Google just not got around to removing it yet?) Be interesting to hear your thoughts.

  • Hi there, we've noticed a sudden drop in both trust and citation flow scores for many of our clients' websites. We haven't done any black hat activities nor done anything differently the last few months that we can think have contributed to this. We have however noticed a backlink from a website: http://www.wordsmith.org/awad/archives.html that has appeared across all the websites which have dropped in rankings. Could this link be the contributing factor & would that mean someone has linked it to our clients' websites?

  • In the SEO guide on Moz, it states as one of the link building strategies: Get your customers to link to you If you have partners you work with regularly, or loyal customers that love your brand, you can capitalize on this by sending out partnership badges—graphic icons that link back to your site (like Google often does with their AdWords certification program). Just as you'd get customers wearing your t-shirts or sporting your bumper stickers, links are the best way to accomplish the same feat on the web. We design websites for churches and non-profits, and put a link back to our site as the designer. We recently have been told this is spammy and not a good idea. However, from what MOZ says, it sounds like they are promoting you do this. Please comment. Thanks.

  • A few months back, we set up canonical URLs on some pages with duplicate content to give some newer pages more link juice. Now, we need to do the opposite and give that same juice to some of the original pages. If we set up canonical URLs on the newer pages to point back to the original pages, are we losing the juice we've been building all along? Sorry for all this convoluted juice talk. Hopefully, my point is getting across here.
