Chat through link building best practices and outreach techniques.

  • Hi Guys - I've noticed recently that one of our competitors is ranking extremely well on Google, while we seem to be fluctuating, along with other competitors, for our main keywords. Our site has a much stronger authority and much more quality links than this competitor and traffic is continuously increasing each month. Would anyone have any explanations as to why we may be seeing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

  • I have just signed up with a company to do affiliate marketing for my site. I am now in the process of  reaching out to publishers and seeing who will publish my link on their site. Is there any benefit in terms of seo for having these links, and can there be any potential downside to these links as well?

  • Hi all.  I have a bit of a unique issue. My company, Smith Corona **used **to be one of the world's premier typewriter manufacturers. However, we have completely got out of that business roughly a decade ago.  Instead, we sell blank thermal shipping labels. As you might imagine, writing content and getting links about paper labels is not easy.  Quite simply, no one cares about labels.  They either stick or they don't. Typewriters is a whole different story.  We still get tons of calls and emails everyday about them.  There are online communities dedicated to them. I think if I even tried a little, I could get backlinks from people interested in typewriters.  The problem is... that we don't do ANYTHING with them at all anymore.  I would really just be pimping out our brand name in hopes of getting some cheap links. The real question is... do I even want these links?  If they are semantically about typewriters and not labels, is it really helping my SEO efforts? Any advice is welcome.  Thanks all!

  • In a rel=prev rel=next set of paginated pages. Is there a benefit to have prev and next links in addition to the numbered links on the page. Or will the numbered links suffice? Any help would be most welcome.

  • hello, As far I am concerned one of the best link building strategies is broken link building. But what about if you reverse the tactic and you build links using only fresh web explorer? Anyone have tried this or not yet? If yes, results are good? I will try it soon on a new site ...and some info regarding results would be appreciated. Once I use it by my self and first links are indexed I will provide more data regarding the campaign... Thanks

  • I had someone from penwarriors.co approach me about putting some content on my site. The content is good. It's unique. It's very relevant and any links out are reasonable. But when I started to look into it, they seem to be churning out a hell of a lot of content for the companies they're doing outreach for and the companies themselves don't seem to be very active on social. I can't find the person they are attributing a guest blog to and I can't find the person that I've been communicating with on linkedin etc. Something doesn't feel right. Any ideas? Simon

  • So I found a keyword that I want to go after, it gets over 30k searches a month, has a 100% CTR and has a difficulty of 42. Now my question is would it be better to build a page on our already established site (DA of 46) since the site and keyword are both related. Or would it be better to get a domain of that keyword and build a small site about it? The .com is taken but I could get a .co or .us just not sure if its worth making a new site or if I should just build a page on my current site about it.

  • Hi friends, I am building backlinks with the url https://abc.com Does it make any difference to rankings if I do not build links with https://www.abc.com? If yes how should I redirect all links built with https://abc.com to  https://www.abc.com? I am feeling that Google is not indexing links in webmaster due to this. please suggest.

  • I am searching for backlink vendors, only english-speaking websites, financial topic. Another option is business, news, technologies, cryptocurrencies related sites. Only high-quality, active and developed websites, real traffic, no spam. If you have some contacts of vendors of such kind (or if you have access to the right website), please share emails - would really appreciate that!

  • Hi Everyone, My client writes articles for a very prominent news source in the area where I live. Attached to each article there is her bio, but she never asked the news source to link to her website. So far, she has written more than 100 articles. What would happen if the news source suddenly links 100 times to her site? Would this be considered spammy from google or unnatural link building? Thank you very much for your answers. Arben

  • Hello, Our website sells software that we have developed, but there are piracy websites that offer a crack/keygen to our software and are linking to our site. From an SEO perspective, are those sites hurtful to us if their spam score is below 30 and their DA is not 1? We'd like to understand if there is any action we need to take from an SEO point or if our site's SEO is not affected by it. Thank you!

  • Hello, We have other sites linking to our site through images in sitewide footers, resulting in a link from every page of each site. Those sites are not owned by us and they decided to link to us on their own. They usually link to us as their "sponsor" or "partner", sponsor as in sponsor of some event and partner as in we sometimes work together on joint initiatives. I've searched Moz forum and other articles, but haven't been able to find an answer to this question. We'd like to make sure Google doesn't consider it to be spammy and we don't get any sort of penalty. Should we ask them not to link to us through those images in a sitewide footer or ask them to simply add "nofollow"? We don't want to remove those links if they are not considered to be harmful and removing them will hurt our DA/PA.

  • As we all attempt to get backlinks for the sites we manage, I have to wonder if it's worth it at all to get a nofollow backlink.  Does Google give and positive credit for a link to a site if it is a nofollow link? Obviously, the follow links are worth pursuing.  I'm just trying to gain some perspective. Thanks,  Wick

  • Hey guys! I've got a quick question: We are getting some guest posting opportunities with a few big sites in our space...
In those guest posts we will also have to chance to link back to 1-2 articles of ours and to our main site. Should I use UTM parameters to track how many clicks we get or will this in any way negatively affect our SEO benefits? Hope you guys know what I mean. I found tons of articles on this but mostly about inbound links... which isn't the case here. Thanks in advance 🙂

  • What do you suppose would be the SEO link value of underwriter or business supporter links on the websites of public radio stations?  For example: http://kuow.org/business-supporters On one hand it is a very reputable domain, but the page has like 400 links on there.

  • From analyzing my competitor‘s websites I can see that I have way fewer external and internal followed links. The number of followed links my competitors are getting each week increases by around 300. Where do these links come from? How can I increase my followed links ?

  • We’re an ecommerce company with a blog of 150+ posts. The blog brings in very low traffic and we were never that consistent in publishing great and frequent content. We now know our organic traffic comes from other pages that are doing great. So our question.. Should we: 1. Stop linking to the blog internally and just leave the it up as is. No harm here we guess, but these posts are not as relevant now and we feel their high bounce rate and low ranking is affecting our overall performance.
    2. Take it down and 410 the pages. Will that many 410s eventually hurt us?
    3. Take it down and 301 to home page of the company. Will permanently redirecting that many pages to our home page hurt us? Appreciate any input.

  • Hi all, In classic newb style I have submitted my new site to several uk directory listings after seeing these listings used by competitors, both local and national. I chose ones with a low-spam score as shown on the Moz site explorer. Now my domain score has jumped up several places over a few days, as has my search position, but will these listings "hurt" in the future? I fully intend on chasing and gaining non-quick'n'easy links in the future for he record. Many thanks!

  • Hi everyone! Done a site audit recently and found that some articles in our Resource content (where we generally put useful industry news/posts) have multiple links in it (4 to 9 links in a single article). And these are usually internal links (within our domain), but there are few mixed with external domains. What we would like to know: What's the best practice in terms of regulating number of links (internal or external) in an article? Another case I noticed, some links in our articles appeared to be targeting same landing page, just different anchor texts used. Will this get us into trouble? Thanks in advanced for your help.

  • One of my clients supplies their product to a number of retail stores. Most of the stores do not currently link back to his website. He is hoping that they might be more motivated to link back if they had a template that made it easy to copy and paste the link back code into their website. Does it make sense to make a password protected page with different link back styles. Some plain text, some different size company logos (so they have different options)? Similar to what Yelp does with their badges.

  • Hi Guys, I am very new hear. I just joined. I have a few websites that I need to manage. I am looking for a software that will allow me to manually add the links that I have been able to acquire. It would also be a bonus if it could search for the links to my site and to see if its still active. Because I have a freelancer working a few hours a week on link building and I need to keep track of the links. I am looking for something simple and good. Any suggestions? By the way, I used Raven Tools many years ago, and it had this feature. But since joining Moz, I don't want to be paying for 2 subscriptions. And I don't know if Raven still has this feature. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Ryan

  • Hi Everyone, I hope that someone will be able to help us with this one as we have trawled the internet looking for a solution! We have multiple domains (.com/.co.uk/.net versions) which all point to the one website, however, some of these domains have a high spam score - 9-11. Our first initial reaction would be to remove the auto redirects, but, the other domains have been a source of conversion in previous months (or so analytics tells us). So what I'm wondering, is do we remove the 'spammy' links from redirecting to our site, or do we leave them there? We certainly don't want to risk a penalty. Thanks for reading!

  • Hi, all. I'm working with a client and trying to come up with an example or two of a tool that attracted huge numbers of inbound links. What come to my mind is the original Zillow home pricing tool. When that came out, it kind of blew people's minds that you could put in any address in the United States and you'd get a (moderately) accurate assessment of a home value. If I recall, they got a bajillion links overnight. I don't need an example quite at that scale (in fact, a smaller success might be better), but I definitely want something a little more recent (even if just the last five years). Any suggestions for me? Much obliged. -Erik

  • Hi, While prospecting  for backlinks target  do you guys filter links less than a specific DA or PA? for instance - if PA<5 then remove
My VA accidentally selected a PA 3 link where the site owner eventually gave us a backlink.
Due to that link the traffic jumped 14X!!!
Had it been my filtering process would never got the backlink and traffic. What do you guys suggest?

  • So I've written this beautiful guest post for a site who've quite frankly done a bad job of promoting it and I'm a little disappointed. So I'm thinking: a) I could send it around to some other publishers and see if they want it.  What would be the duplicate content problems here if any? b) Why not just publish it on my own site and promote it to other blogs and the world in the normal way. c) Is this just wrong and if I say I'm going to write for someone then I write for them and if they make a mess of it that's my problem and I should be more selective about who I give my talents away to in the future. Thanks in advance. I am fairly new to outreach and all the internet searching on this topic is returning stuff about 'allowing other people to post guest blogs on your site' which is not helpful.  Rank Brain eh?  Supposed to be smart. But it's really not.  🙂

  • Searched - not seeing this exact issue(sorry if I'm wrong). I'm my report I'm seeing that we have old URLs in the wild using http.  Those requests come to our site, and then are redirected to the https version.  However if this url does not exist, then there's another redirect 301 to the actual page. This obviously causes a redirect chain.  I've searched  but don't see a clear answer to this.  How can I avoid the chain?  How can I go from the http to the new https URL without first incurring the double redirect? "Look for any recurring chains that could be rewritten as a single rule. " FWIW I don't see any http to https rewritecond's in my htaccess, and cannot trace where that redirect is generated from.

  • Hi, I currently have built my website with internal links to boost my category pages (the ones that are the most important with the most traffic). Is the way to go or nowadays or doesn't it matter what pages you boost. I beleive  what I did is some sort of "page rank sculpting" but is it still useful ? or I should I link natural across my website even though some pages will get a boost and some won't ? The link that I have are at the bottom of my content (not in the footer) but at the bottom of the page next to each other ? does they count or is it really bad to have them that way ? I have a blog and I was wondering if when I link from my blog page for example about "Barolo" to my page about "Piedmont" if I should also link from my page about "Piedmont" to my Barolo page or if the link only has to go one way from my blog / Barolo page to my piedmont page to boost Piedmont. Thank you,

  • I thought that the important factor in the value of a link was how many outing links a page has total.  Some tools seems to tell me that the important data point is how many EXTERNAL links a page has.   Which number should I be paying attention to when looking at pages I want to get linked from? (Yes, I know there are many other factors that are important)
