    Hello thereIt has just been confirmed that my site is suffering for a Google Penality. The odd thing is that it is just for my set of key keywords and not the whole site. It seems in 2010 that a rouge SEO company I used sent loads of spammy links but I have lots of other good links too. What is your advice moving forward? Will it drop over time? Do I set up a new site (this has been established over 10 years) or try and get better quality links to compensate for the spam ones? Thanks so much! Kindest regards Victoria

    I'm getting very confused.  What is the important number regarding backlinks to my site? The Moz number vs. Hubspot grader spits out vastly different numbers. For the particular site I'm trying to improve, I don't have Webmaster Tools installed yet (waiting for webmaster to do as it doesn't have asynchronous code on it). Also apologies for novice question but I remember once being told that offpage SEO and specifically the amount of external backlinks is responsible for 75% of your SERP.  Is that still the case?

    I am looking to take on a new client but when I looked at their current backlinks they have 420 low quality spammy irrelevant backlinks, all with keyword anchor text and no branded links at all. The site is still ranking well at the moment but I don't expect this to be the case long-term. Would you try and remove the old links and then disavow any that you can't remove or would you start again on a new domain? Not sure which way to play it! Thanks! Karen

    Hello everyone, I am fairly new to SEO so I'm still trying to get my head round everything, I am currently looking into some back links .. well looking at competitor's back links to copy. I was just wondering what's more important page authority or domain authority? So for example if a page has a page authority of 50 and a domain authority of 10 is that better than if a page have page authority 10 and a domain authority of 50. Thanks so much in advance!

    Hey guys, could you help me with the following issue. When I leave a comment via Disqus, it adds my url as plain text to the code of the page I left my comment on. At the same time, a backlink to my site is in my Disqus profile (once you click on the user name in your comment)  So, my question is if Google will consider such a backlink as a legit link to my site and if it makes general sense for SEO to leave Disqus comments?

    I think that I have watched all the webinairs and online courses available on the web, but I still don't seem to know how and where to get links from. I know what type of links I should be getting and what type I should be avoiding, but that little luck so far. I came across the website of Matthew Woodward about tiered link building where he explains how to do this type of link building in depth. It seems quite interesting but also a lot of work so I don't want to invest my precious time in something that will be penalised by Google in the near future. Is there anyone that can give me some reason why I should or shouldn't do this?

    I'm having difficulty creating a solid link base. I would prefer to only have links that are on relevant sites that are likely to drive traffic rather then just adding my company page to site directories. I've checked out the whiteboard Friday edition of link building and have also used the new Moz analytics that helps recommend sites to link to, but all the recommendations were directories. So, could anyone hold my hand and guide me through the world of Link building? Your help, as always, is much appreciated. Thanks everyone Dave

Here's a question, www.allworldlinks.com appear to have a decent page authority but they are bombarding my site with hundreds of links, I now have over 12,000 from them. This is not good I guess?

    Curious as to how you separate a "good" link from a "bad" one.  I go through Open Site Explorer and see a variety of sites linking to our page.  Some have good Domain/Page Authority and others do not.  When looking for links, where do you determine whether a link from a specific page will help/hurt you in terms of their DA/PA?  Translated another way:  How much DA/PA does a site/page need to have before you decide it will pass good link juice to yours via a link?

    We run a big kids website: http://mocomi.com/ and have over 2500+ posts. Its about 2 years old now. No SEO was done on this site until the last two months when I was hired for SEO. I divided the SEO into 2 parts - on-page and off-page SEO. For the last 1.5 months I did the on-page fixing - correcting URLs, optimizing posts with best keywords, adding meta titles and descriptions to each post, 301 redirects etc. Now that on-page optimization is over, I have to do the off-page thing - build links. But with so much content I'm confused on how should I go forward. Among the 2500 posts I have listed down 700 posts that have real traffic potential so I'm planning to build links to these. But 700 is a huge number which includes our home page, 50+ category pages and rest are posts. So the question is how should I build links to these? Should I pick up each page and build links to it and move to next or as some people suggested, build most links to home page and category pages and that'll pass pagerank to my posts and help them rank. What link building plan would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

    Hey guys, Just wondering, how does Google view reciprocal link building nowadays? I've heard in the past that it's something that Google isn't particularly keen on. However, more recently, I've also read that - as long as the links are decent (and in moderation) - link exchanging is by no means a bad thing. The reason I ask is that I'm thinking of creating a "resource/recommended links page" for a client of mine. Because of their industry, it's really apparent that attaining links is often only possible if there is the opportunity of a reciprocal link in return. Therefore, I'd need to have a resource/recommend links page of my own. Is this something I should go ahead with to make it much easier to attain links? Or should I try to avoid reciprocal links and attempt to pinpoint one-way linking opportunities - even if they're thin on the ground? Any help much as appreciated as always. Cheers.

    Dear all We received a penalty notice at webmaster tools 2 months ago, in that stated  "your pages violate our quality guidelines" and "contain some inorganic links to your site".  Ours is a Coupon website and tried to follow all quality guidelines given in webmaster central. Also we tried to identify and remove spam kind of links and still we are working on that. Suddenly from yesterday website traffic restricted to 3-4 visits/hour, but website main keyword SERPs are not changed much and still ranking at good positions. my question if any website is under manual penalty, it's traffic will be restricted by Google???. Every link we build manually and not gone for any paid links or reciprocal links. But the sites given some links as sitewide, example we tried to get a back link & submitted url at once only, but it was showing in webmaster Total links 468 and linked pages 1. Can any one please explain, how it can happen?.   We are trying to remove these spam kind of links, but from directory owners response is a bit disappointing, kindly any one suggest that, will Google Disavow tool  help in this regard and how much time it will take to nullify the links?.     Hi everyone, I have a new client that's a huge company and has a disastrous ranking. It's a Human Resources company that among other things, they post job offers on their site in which people have to register to apply. As a channel to outreach more people, they are using a popular site for job offers on the country. There, the job position is described and they tell users to apply within this channel or on their own site. But there's no actual link to their site. Will Google find it spammy to post their site's link for that specific job offer on this channel on every job description? No competitor is doing it so it made me doubt a little bit. NOTE: The job offer channel doesn't allow us to "nofollow" a link. All the links are followed. Thanks to any suggestion.

    Hi, we are launching a new site called Gifly.com, it's all about Gifs. At the moment, our robots.txt is blocking everything because we want to have a solid url structure before going public. There is only one kind of page, the permalink which has this form: http://gifly.com/QPmf/ (the four characters 'QPmf' are completely random) What we made different from the multitude of other Gifs site is that we are
    trying to categorize gifs with hashtags, so we introduced these kind of urls: http://gifly.com/FoYi/

    Okay, kind of silly question but i am looking for some help interpreting an analysis done by John Doherty almost a year ago: http://moz.com/blog/what-kind-of-content-gets-links-in-2012 In the document he mentions the correlation that longer posts on average receive more links but the graphs were really hard to interpret (for me). Based on the data what is the correct size we should shoot for (most graphs were missing labels). Any one have any insight? Should i shoot for 300 words per post, higher, etc? Thanks! Kyle

    I run an eCommerce store and have a decent number of quality links pointing to it(which is still growing). It's been 6 months since I started it, and I'm getting between 100-120 organic visits per day right now. I've had a few more quality guest post/infographic links, and I'm also focusing on optimizing individual pages, but my traffic still seems to have plateaued. I'm beginning to doubt that more links is the answer. All of my content is unique(no manufacturer descriptions) and I'm still being outranked by sites that have spammier link profiles and copy/paste descriptions. Any thoughts?

    My site has had a manual action performed on it by Google indicating that I have inbound links that fall outside of their quality guidelines. I did my own research, found what I thought was the issue, had the links removed and requested reconsideration. Google's response surprised me in that they highlighted two specific pages with links that were the direct result of valid press releases and a publisher picking up our release off a wire service. Has anyone else seen this occur? Anyone had a case successfully reconsidered? I realize that I don't need to do anything at all as the manual action is in effect and will stay that way, discounting those links, but I would rather a) not have any manual action against my site and b) know for the future so this doesn't happen again. Also, is this applicable for guest blog posts, which effectively create the same type of backlinks? Thanks

    I see that Wikipedia outbound links are all no-followed, is there any benefit (aside from the traffic) for having links here now ? For example is their co-citation and co-occurance benefits.  I know there is without the links since from seeing previous Moz content about this saying Google getting good at connecting brand/s and topic mentions on a page (without any links) so appreciate Wikipedia is still good for that sort of thing. And a no-followed link is obviously good for the potential traffic.  But is there any additional SEO benefit to having a no followed link on a wikipedia entry/stub too ? (aside from its contribution to your no-followed links which in turn contribute to a natural looking link profile) Cheers Dan

    Hi First - is it possible for internal anchor text to be considered 'over optimised' in terms of diversity or does that just apply to external backlinks ? For example If you have a main site section/page thats about a service you offer and you call the page this service and the URL this service and then link to it from many internal locations (but in a logical useful manner not just for the sake of it) using this service/keyword as the link anchor text i take it this WONT ever be considered over optimised anchor text since is completely in context, makes sense, is useful and after all is what the page/section is called (so would be strange to call it and link to it via any other term) ? Second - I have a project who's backlink profile is nice and diverse and could by no means be considered over optimised on a domain level.  However looking at page level a main site section/page (as above) has only one back link with exact match anchor text from the BOTW directory, so in regard to that page keyword rich anchor text from this one backlink is at 100%.  However the anchor text is what the page/section is called (title and url).  I presume that this is also unlikely to be considered over optimised (since makes sense, is logical helpful and would be strange to name it anything else) or could it be considered over optimised ?     Hello, In my content management for our ecomerce site, I've found that there are sometimes links to sites in our industry that have "helpful links" sections. Several strong sites link directly to these resource sections. There are 4 different topics that fit this trend in our industry. Would it leak too much link juice to make 4 comprehensive link sections and place a link to them on our "Useful Articles" page? Or should I stick to one comprehensive link section? Or perhaps a small link section? Or none at all? Thanks.

    A client of ours - www.helenbattphotography.com - was ranking well for local keywords. However, the rankings started to drop as of January this year (slowly) and quite considerably since May. We have not had any Google penalties. To date we have gone through backlinks and removed a few low quality/dubious links that were built around 5 years ago by another agency the client was using and also disavowed some others. This was done around 2 months ago. No impact to date. The website is hovering around page 4 and 5 for the keywords that it used to rank for on page 1 for. We are really struggling to increase the rankings for this client. We have introduced good, unqiue content to the site - not that this was ever really a problem on the site - but this has also made little difference. Would be great to get some feedback on the site and any obvious pointers that we might be missing here - a case of not being able to see the wood through the trees. Thanks

    I manage the seo for a bunch of different websites. We currently have a problem with links from low quality sources.... way too many of them and then way too much exact match anchor text. We have a lot of sites that we basically linked together (blog network) and we are in the process of correcting this. We know we have a lot of links we need to remove and/or anchor text we need to rewrite. My question is how do I know which ones to remove and/or edit. I know that having some links from low quality sources isn't bad, or links from some other sites you own, or having some exact match anchor text. I know this isn't all bad, and some of it is expected but we have a LOT of this going on. So basically I need to make decisions on each and every link as to whether we want to keep it, edit the anchor text, nofollow it, or delete it. I'm just not sure of what the best action is that should to be taken for each link.     Hello, I received the message in Google Webmasters Tools about unnatural links to site (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UFHCw4Q_FQ) for two of my websites. I have a hard time undestanding why since I don't buy links, I don't do link exchanges and I don't directories or article directories. Anyways, I received this message on Friday and I didn't lose any rankings on either of those sites or at least not on my main keyword which is the only one that matters. Is it normal that I didn't lose any rankings? Would you advise I do anything specific? Thanks a lot.

    Hello everyone, I had to write a white paper for an entirely different purpose than to drive links, but it did come out very well and I think it would be a fantastic tool in my SEO efforts. What do you guys think is the best way to market a white paper? Obviously I will let our email subscribers know about it and place a link to it in a prominent place on the website, but if anyone has any extra ideas, I would love to hear them. Also, what is the best way to host it? Taking the Moz beginners guide for example, I would love to just put it on my server like http://static.seomoz.org/files/SEOmoz-The-Beginners-Guide-To-SEO-2012.pdf but is it necessary that I make it web-friendly like http://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo? Can the former do anything for SEO? What if there are links to and from the site? Any advice would be great. Thanks

    I bought an existing domain name on Sedo sometime ago and launched a new website on it in early June this year. I noticed there are about 5 or 6 spammy links from directories that were obviously bought by the previous domain owner but they're pointing to pages that never existed on the new website. Other than that, the link profile is 100% clean and it's quite good actually, lots of links from my content being shared on social networks. So should I be worried about these links? Like a lot of webmasters, I'd like to avoid using the disavow tool, I really don't trust that thing.

    Hi all. Here's the scenario. There is a company who provide financial services to their online clients. On ALL their clients sites they have a "payments-by-us" style logo with backlink to their homepage domain name. This means they have over 3,000 links from a multitude of non-related websites - with just 3 or 4 anchor text keywords in these backlinks. No surprise they have been hit by Penguin My questions What it the best practice for these type of linking LOGO's. Should they link to a dedicated page,and NOT the homepage? Should they have branded + anchor text, no text, or just branded? or a combination of each Should they even be a link at all as they are coming from such a diverse group of sites? I understand how Penguin penalises for overuse of money word keywords as anchor text. This is something that has definitely happened here (by the bucket load) ... Assume the anchor text is "Green Chips Finance" and that phrase is also overused and a bit "stuffy" in their homepage. Here's my question - could simply lowering the prominence / significance of "Green Chips Finance" on the actual home page, help in reducing the impact of the damage caused by the thousands of backlinks with "Green Chips Finance" as the anchor text? I say this as they have a similar number of back links saying "Red Chips Finance", but there is no mention of "Red Chips Finance" on their homepage other than in the keywords and a couple of standard text mentions (no H1, H2, alt text etc) ... interestingly, "Red Chips Finance" (not the real words) is Google No1 whereas "Green Chips Finance" has been demoted from longtime No1 to about 4.
