Chat through link building best practices and outreach techniques.

  • I'd like to add a directory of websites to my ecommerce site. We operate within a nice niche both in terms of products and demographics. The directory would be specific to our verifical and market. My concern is how Google will see these external links. A reciprocal link won't be required to be in our directory, but I suspect many sites would like back to us as we outreach to them with content ideas, their directory links, and as we share them with our social network on twitter and facebook. The directory would be broken down into categories so each page may have 1-20 external links on it. Our architecture already incldes category links (all internal) so these would be in additional the links you would normally see on our site. I'd also like to aggregate some content - again, mostly external links. Will Google have take poorly to that aggregation?

  • Hello People, I have been searching for a service to help us with our link building and have been talking to a company that uses the 3-Way link exchange method and my question is: Does it work well? Below I pasted an email from this company explaining their method. Thanks in advance to everyone! =============================== Our success rate is about 80%. For one way links, we use 3 way link exchange method for making links. Suppose your site is A. My website is B. My friends website is C and friend's client's site is D. I will add a link on B linking to D and my friend will add a link on C linking to A. This is the procedure we use for making links. We check the quality of the website before putting link on it. The site will be completely relevant, no spam links will present there and the page will be minimum of PR1. ================================

  • We hired a SEO firm to build links for us two months ago, and now, we received "unatural link" warning from Google.  SEO firm informed that they have taken steps to remove these links.  But, we don't think we should trust and depend on them for that.  We want to be on it and would like your advise for the following three questions: how to determina whether a link is "natural" or "unatural"?  We want to make sure we don't remove the natural ones We saw 933 links from Blogspot.com, that for sure do not look natural, how do we go about to remove it? Based on SEO firm's report, certain links have be removed, but, it is still showing on Google Webmaster, should we give it sometime to crawl and confirm?

  • Hi, about a month ago, I obtained a couple of good authority external links into my client's site.  One of these is from a local government site, ie a .gov.uk website, which has a Domain Authority of 99 according to OSE and a page authority of 67. However, these links are not showing up in SEOmoz or OSE and the domain authority of my client's site has not changed.  Why do the links not show?  Surely a period of 5 weeks is long enough for these links to be indexed?

  • Basically we are a small business (2 employees) we don't have the time or resources to be writing hundreds of original quality articles each week (nor do we have the time to write endless guest blogs each week) how do we gain links from one article? (not including poor quality article submission sites) And how do SEO's write so many guest blogs? for the returns on time invested!!! Confused Newbie, thanks in advance!!!

  • Hi, When a page has too many links (over 100) due to the number of monthly blog archives for example, is it possible to use a code (like no index but just for one link)  that would prevent Google from counting the link? Or not in which case the only options would be to leave the extra links or to delete them. I do not want to put a no index at the page level but more at link level by preventing SE to follow the least important links but keeping them active for users. Thank you, David

  • While searching for outreach targets I came across a site that charges $100 to post your infographic with a review. I think this is similar to someone that says "Sure, I'll publish your guest post. First, please send me $100." I'm curious what others think about the practice of paying for guest posts? (It seems like it could easily be lumped in with paid links from Google's point of view).

  • I have set up each page on my site to be a landing page as it were . Employing a couple of concepts one of which being that I do not want the user to browse away from the page to a page that has no contact form on it . I would in fact prefer as most landing page companies seem to agree that the user stay on the page where they land and contact me through the form . I currently have a page called my domain/links that displays a superfish Joomla menu that I have not styled or done anything with really because I only use it to access the pages while editing and have no real intention of a user Actually finding the page . I intend on  eventually deleting it . Most of the pages on the site are directed towards geographical cities in the surrounding area . The pages are not duplicate content obviously but they are all speaking pretty much the same message to my audience . Hey this company does electrical work in your town . I have no problem with putting a text link menu at the bottom of the page before the footer with all of the pages on the site  . However this being a content management site I could simply put this at the bottom of every page . Should I do this ? Or should I put this only on the home page and then have all the other pages link back to the homepage . Or should I do a hybrid of this and put them all on the home page and then on the other pages put Four or five links to different services that we do such as recessed lighting , under cabinet lighting , get a quote . Pages such as this that I actually want the user to possibly browse to Such as in a traditional website model . I am a firm believer that keeping the person on this page Leads to higher conversions . However visually speaking the opportunity to fill out the form is there on every page . There are many things to consider so I would like a few professional opinions . Thanks ! PS Merchant circle has been getting some negative press lately . I have a blog there that has a great page ranking . Previously I was copying a version of my text links and posting it at the bottom of my blogs . Is merchant circle still in good staining and a good bet for links ? opinions comments thank you !

  • Google has confirmed they have sent out of over 700,000 messages through its google webmaster interface in February. Thats more than what they sent in all of 2011. Where does this leave us? What have we done wrong? What works going forward? Im sure many business's will be left in a very bad position over this update, people will lose their jobs. I always considered myself to be very careful with my link building as I am totally reliant on search for my business. I think something so big requires a better explanation from google. Has SEOmoz any more info on such a big update? This really needs input from the big SEO heads.

  • SEOMOZ is telling me I have more than 100 links on quite a few of my pages, and I cant seem to find out what links they are finding. Like for instance on this page http://standupguys.biz/what-we-haul/commercial-junk-removal-services/computer-removal-recycling/  It is telling me that I have 117 hyper links (which is WAY too high). Can anyone explain to me where these are coming from, and how I can avoid this?? Please and thank you.

  • I get a lot of spammy comment comments to my blog which I trash, but I'm also particular about the comments I allow. How do the search engines regard these comments, should I allow more to be posted as it looks like I'm getting more traffic. And by posting these comments, who benefits from the backlinks?

  • Hi I am looking for some advice / lists of recommended local search directories / citations that I can add our double glazing window site - as part of our strategy to improve local search rankings and increase our visibility on the web through SEO for phrases such as 'pvc windows'  'pvc doors' 'double glazing' and 'conservatories' For example I have added the business to the likes of Yelp
    Qype
    Tipped
    Ufindus
    Hotfrog
    Freeindex
Brownbook But are there any specific home improvement sites that I should add the business to also. I would also be interested in sharing recommended strategy for this market in relation to link building, for example I have thought about offering staff in local goverment / universities / hospitals a genuine discount on our products as part of their staff discount schemes Many Thanks

  • hi, first question on here. Just starting to get into link building and after a day already confused. I'm using the seomoz pro link analyser / open site explorer to look at my sites links against competitors. First up was dmoz.org. great rankings so a great link target, turns out though that I already have one!! Any ideas why it isn't showing up on my linking domains. Is this a seomoz oversight or am i not getting my alloted 'juice' from this domain??

  • I have a flash site and have been very successful at getting my keywords that are in my site title and also in the text of my page to rank well. What is the best way to get additional keywords to rank without increasing the text on your page. Is it just getting more anchor-text backlinks pointing your site with the new keywords in the text?

  • Hi all, I am currently working on link building to our site http://www.betxpert.com which has a number of keywords I am targeting. I have become aware that domains with the keywords are available. We (in Danish) target the phrase "ekpert tips" and the domain www.eksperttips.dk is available. Would it be a good thing for us, to register this domain and do one of the following things: a) DNS forward traffic to our main site b) Build a small blog with minor content and linking to the main site with text links with the tekst "ekspert tips"? c) Simply do nothing, save the money and spend it otherwise... Hope someone can give me a sound advice. Best regards, Rasmus

  • I am not looking for a full service SEO agency. I just want link building. Not paid links, not link networks, not blog comments, not bookmarks...real, legit, decent links. Does anyone have any experience working with an SEO agency that helped them develop their link profile positively and at a reasonable price? I'm willing to pay for the service, I just want to work with someone who won't buy links or send a bunch of spam our way. If anyone has worked with such an agency, please let me know so I can contact them for more info. Thanks!

  • Hi, we have created quality hubpage networks and squidoo lenses for the purpose of driving qualified traffic to our sites and generating authority backlinks. The backlinks from squidoo and hubpages are all dofollow, have been shared via social networks and are indexed in Google, why aren't any of them showing in OSE? Many thanks in advance, Lee

  • Hi, We recently got "the message" from Google about unnatural links for two of our 50 sites. Ranking has dropped significantly since, we did not take any action to remove the links. All our 50 sites were managed by the same SEO company but only two got this message. We are in the process of understanding the best ways to deal with this situation, but currently there are two main approaches we can detect: Remove the links, resubmit for reconsideration Ignore the message and do not do anything, if you do something it is actually like admitting you did something wrong, and Google can not prove that you did... Any insights on what approach we should adopt? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi all Mozers, I have a couple of questions re the backlink reports in Open Site Explorer. In the introductory video Rand suggests that you can indentify backlinks that are a) Having a positive effect, and b) Having a negative effect on SEO campaigns. Do you identify such links using the domain/page authority of the linking page? Also, we know we have more links than OSE is reporting, does this mean that the links that are not reported are not helping our SEO campaign? Many thanks in advance, much appreciated. Lee

  • I have noticed that when I run the open explorer on my website that I get a different list of linking domains depending on if the back link used www or not. I always ask and specify to use the non-www but many people do not pay a lot of attention to that? I have set up 301 from www to the non-www as the non-www is my primary URL. How do i get credits for the 50+ that are pointing to the www?

  • If you had to choose: A)  100 links contained in posts on 100 PR2* blogs, all on separate IP addresses, where none of the posts had associated social signals, or B) 100 links contained in posts within a single PR2* blog (single IP address), where each of the posts had 20 associated social signals, Which would you choose to increase your SERP performance? *I chose PR2 so that PageRank would not be a factor in the decision.

  • I just two minutes ago learned what a Facebook note is. I discovered this while doing a search of one of my keywords and i noticed one of the results was a Facebook note talking about the keyword with links in it to a competitors Amazon page. Is anyone here familiar with using Facebook Notes as an SEO tool? It obviously works if they are appearing in my search results. Does anyone know basic guidelines in terms of how many links, anchor text, etc... ? Thanks a lot...

  • Hey there, I am working with a site who recently received an email from Google that they have been penalized.  Since I have only been working with this site for a couple of weeks I know it's from past SEO work.  I tried to pull back links for them and they have 1.5 million of them and every one I look at is a good quality site. I did notice one thing that stood out and I need your opinion.  They have a blog in which they run about 3 ad banners and about 4 other links site wide creating several thousand links with the same anchor text and seems to be a bit spammy on the page.  However, the blog is owned by them... and the amount of same anchor text links is a very small percentage of their 1.5 million links. Can you offer a different way for me to attempt to find these bad links?  Could their blog by itself cause the issue?  Please share your thoughts with me about this.

  • I am currently in the research stage of finding more sites that I will be able to do things such as submit infographics, guest post, or get easy backlinks that are legit. I feel out of options, as I have already built links with a lot of sites but feel like I need more. Has anyone ever seen someone actually sharing all of their hard work by providing a list of all the sites that worked for them? Or does there come a point when really your only option left is to guest post or be a HARO source? I have been doing those things all along--I'm not just looking for easy, lazy links!  Is there anyone who's gotten a site up to a high PR score who's felt out of options, like they've already done all they know how to do? I'd like your opinions. I know it seems like an outrageous question to ask, but I thought I'd throw it out there. I'd be willing to share sources too; I'm not just trying to mooch off people!
