The news this week is pretty dire. On the heels of the US Government's bailout of Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae and AIG Financial, stock markets in the US, Russia, Japan and elsewhere are suffering tremendous losses. The NYTimes paints a linkbait-worthy, interactive picture of the financial industries collapse. If you're anything like me, this news brings on some anxiety and fear - neither of which a...
Tonight, I received an email with a familiar question, asking why the top companies providing SEO consulting and development services rarely ever provide guarantees (and virtually never use it as a marketing tactic). To this, there are three solid reasons that compel SEOmoz internally as well as the many companies we work with/...
Another business-focussed post from me today (with a little SEO at the end). I was answering a Q&A the other day in a kind of tag-team formation with Rand when I realised that some of my thinking would make a good blog post. The question was about how to grow a new agency and asked whether we thought that contacting site owners and pointing out flaws / suggesting improvements was a good way to win new business. Rand and I sung with one voice to say (paraphrased) that we weren't big fans of the cold approach and that networking (both online and offline) was one of the keys to success. I wanted to elaborate on that a little bit.
Not many people know that I actually attended the University of Washington in Seattle and worked, briefly, towards a degree in finance, thinking that I might join the ranks of Wall Street. It was a long time ago (in web years), and I dropped out of the program two classes away from graduation to pursue the company that would become SEOmoz full time (in 2001). Before I did, though, I met a ...
Owning a domain name is much like owning land. On top of that land you can build something valuable (or something you want to use yourself), you can sell the land on to someone else (with or without construction) and it has an address. Of course, this applies more to generic domains.
Frank Costello: [while eating crab] Do you know John Lennon? Billy Costigan: Yeah, sure, he was the president before Lincoln. Frank Costello: Lennon said, "I'm an artist. You give me a fucking tuba, I'll get you something out of it." Billy Costigan: [sarcastically] Well I tell you Mr. Costello, I'd like to squeeze some fucking money out of it. ...
About two weeks ago Rand and Scott posted a Whiteboard Friday explaining how to get a SEO job. I think it is a great resource for SEO’s who already have a lot of experience, but what about those who don’t? How are the inexperienced supposed to get their first job at an internet technology company? The foll...
Every time Rand receives a marketing book, he puts in on my desk. I don't know if it's a gesture of "Here, you read stuff..." or if it's a more direct "Read this or you're fired" (which is clearly how Rand operates, for those of you who know him well), but I've got a stack of books at home that are one giant "Read these" list. During my flights to and from Sa...
My copy of The Tipping Point had been collecting dust on the bookshelf for a couple of years now and while moving some things around I found myself thumbing through the pages. I know from a few comments that a handful of SEOMoz members and employees have read the book, and I decided it might be worthwhile for me to reread it again....
I was anxious to read The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss. I had picked it up while waiting in line at my local Kinkos because something on the dust jacket caught my attention. I thought it would be kind of a "Getting Things Done" for the Internet Marketing set and once I got the book home, I couldn't wait to read it. Anticipation, unfortunate...
Let me just preface this post by saying that I hate management books and business theory books and nearly everything that starts with the phrase "The Seven Habits of Highly..." That said, I got so many recommendations to read Jim Collins' book, Good to Great, that I couldn't resist. In particular, two p...
When is the last time a book that was relevent to Search Engine Marketing wasn't obsolete by the time it hit the printing press? For most of us, the appeal of SEM is its dynamic nature, a constantly changing environment with a relatively level playing field. This doesn't translate well to printed materials that take time to edit, review, print and distribute. With the immediacy of bre...
Every month, I have at least a dozen people tell me that I need to write a book. The SEOmoz blog is great, they'll say, but a book has the power to connect with an enormous audience, and besides, they'll continue, I need something to read on the plane. I've finally come to the realization that they're right. Despite my frenetic schedule, packed with travel, clients, in-house projects, e...
