Content Marketing

Content forms the foundation of SEO. If you want to rank, you first need content. If you want to rank well in a competitive environment, you likely need an exceptional content strategy. Content can take many forms: blog posts, product pages, pdfs, videos, forums, and more. Almost anything you put on your website for your audience counts as "content."

Content Marketing is the practice of creating and marketing content for the purpose of driving traffic, increasing awareness, and/or supporting a brand.

In SEO, good content can also drive links to your website, which in turn helps to increase your search traffic from Google.

Modern Business and Content Guidance from Bell Labs

I've been reading The Idea Factory, the history of the innovation that came out of Bell Labs around WWII. Innovation, invention and ideas are things that we don't get to talk much about in SEO. It's all about keywords, links, and content, but I want you to take some time today to think about ideas, inventions and innovations. Why? How to Leverage Content Communities to Expand Your Brand Reach

I feel like I can safely assume that we can all agree on the increasing importance of awesome content. Recently, it seems like everyone is championing for companies to evolve the way in which they a...

Data Visualization Principles: Lessons from Tufte

When I began to practice SEO 8 years ago, I never would have guessed that I'd be writing a post about data visualization. Perhaps I might have foreseen myself writing about web analytics or information architecture, but data visualization seemed like something for the statistics fans. But today in web marketing, the emphasis on content has never been stronger, and it just so happens that ...

How to Turn Your Content into Link Bait

In late December of 2011, HTML5 cheat sheets, which we originally created for WebDesignLedger (WDL), were shared by Google on their Google Developers profile. WDL has 74k+ Twitter followers. Google Developers has 65k+ users in their circles. Together, their promotion increased our referral traffic for that day by 300%. Since then, we’ve experienced a steady stream of traffic and incoming back links. This was definitely a link bait win for us.

21 Tactics to Increase Blog Traffic (Updated 2014)

It's easy to build a blog, but hard to build a successful blog with significant traffic. Over the years, we've grown this blog to hundreds of thousands of visitors each month and helped lots of other blogs, too. I launched a personal blog late last year and was amazed to see how quickly it gained thousands of visits to each post. There's an art to increasing a blog's traffic, and given that we ...

Search Engine Algorithm Basics

A good search engine does not attempt to return the pages that best match the input query. A good search engine tries to answer the underlying question. If you become aware of this you'll understand why Google (and other search engines), use a complex algorithm to determine what results they should return.

SEO and Emotion

Emotions are a strong motivator of human behavior. This is even true on the web. The more that ranking signals continue to evolve, the more significant the role that emotion-motivated actions play in search engine optimization. After all, one of our primary focuses as SEOs is to develop content that makes everyone who sees it want to share it and say wow.
