The industry's top wizards, doctors, and other experts offer their best advice, research, how-tos, and insights—all in the name of helping you level-up your SEO and online marketing skills.
As we all know, there are a lot of so-called SEO experts sending out emails telling you that they guarantee page 1 ranking but then ask for your link. I don't agree with that strategy; instead, I think that taking these 7 steps will help get your name out there and connect with the people within our industry and make you look like a real SEO expert.
We've been pouring in hours on Linkscape, growing the index (46+ million domains & 36+ billion pages), making the updates closer together and refining the quality of our metrics. Today, we've got two big announcements that should be exciting for nearly everyone in the SEO development and analysis space. First off, we're launching a free Linkscape API to access two of Linkscape's most popular metrics - mozRank of a URL and the number of external links to a URL. Second, we've launched a list of the top 500 sites & pages on the web, ordered by the number of unique root domains linking to them (alongside other interesting SEO metrics).
After Rebecca’s desperate plea for YOUmoz posts, I felt compelled to stop being a lazy churl and get my finger out.
So here you go!
Self promotion is a big thing in our little community, and in my comment I alluded that it may be leading to the dwindling number of YOUmoz posts. As such, for all you lovely SEO people I am going to lay down my pros and cons of posting on your own blog, as opposed to posting here.
It's late. I'm just back from a week of travel and crazy amounts of email (note to other CEOs, when emailing 120K people with a special offer, be wary of putting your email address as the reply-to). I had a terrific time at the Online Marketing Summit - great people, many of whom I'd never met before, an impressive turnout of more than 500 (even in a down economy; wow!) and some terrific networking parties (the conference even featured catered dinner for the attendees, which was really nice). One of the subjects that arose, as usual, was the emergence and power of social media, and I had some quick thoughts to share.
I have never been a fan of motivational speakers. In fact, there is only one motivational speech that ever stuck in my head. The rest were immediately mocked and forgotten. It was delivered by a C-level executive at a previous employer during an on-site brainstorming session with the entire web team, for which I was the in-house SEO. I find myself thinking about it at least once a day and the message hasn't failed me yet.
Sometimes the power of the internet and the modern age just astounds me. I'll see something that I just need to share and this is one of those times. It's not necessarily about SEO directly but it certainly demonstrates some amazing internet marketing and it re-emphasis just how powerful data and original content is.
This week Rand discusses how to position your blog within your niche. Blogging is obviously an incredibly powerful tool for building a brand and can be effective in almost any industry. However, there are important considerations to take into account when you're setting up a blog, and that's what this installment of Whiteboard Friday is all about....
May It Please the Mozzers,
Content aggregators should pay attention to a recent settlement between the New York Times and GateHouse Media. According to Online Media Daily, the New York Times agreed to remove headlines and first sentences of GateHouse articles referenced by the New York Times on one of its content aggregator sites, Boston.com. Is this case part of a trend?

So as we all know, universal searching is going to be more widespread in the future. But we all know that images, videos and news comes from social media portals. So does this mean that in order to make an effective SEO campaign, an SMO campaign is equally important?
I love you, Really Simple Syndication. And I love you too, Atom. And if you are a social media marketer, an SEO or just someone who is tracking a company's online presence, then you probably feel the same way. Using RSS feeds to consolidate sources of information is nothing new to most marketers, but I figured I would write this for those who have not yet discovered the power of RSS.
I was pinging people on Twitter about what to blog about, and Michael Vandemar suggested I take a look at his post about Google web search switching to AJAX. He and some other SEOs have recently noticed that Google search results URLs have been displaying the search query string after a ha...
SEO communities are presented with a very tough challenge:
1. Do I have simple, basic info that has been tried and tested and will help a novice webmaster improve their site without baffling them with acronyms and search jargon.
... or
2. Do I opt to discuss more technical and advanced issues, narrowing my market to the higher level SEOs.
A couple years ago, I posed some questions from the SEO world that I couldn't answer. Tonight, I'd like to repeat that process and throw up some dilemmas that, once again, have me in a quandry.

I'm a big fan of Top Gear. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the British TV show Top Gear, it's a multi-award winning motoring program that has over 350 million viewers worldwide.
