Getting Started with Top Competing Content

The Top Competing Content tool within Competitive Research helps you explore your competitors’ most visible content and the keywords they rank for to pinpoint gaps and opportunities for rankings, content creation, and more.

To get started:

  1. Enter your domain
  2. Select whether you like to see results for a Domain, Subdomain, or Subfolder
  3. Enter up to 3 competitor domains, subdomains, or subfolders to compare
  4. Select the domain type for your competitor
  5. Select your preferred market
  6. Click Analyze Competitors

Competitor Overview

After clicking Analyze competitors the Overview module will populate with information regarding the ranking keywords for each site entered.

A. Site — The URL for the site entered for comparison

B. Ranking Keywords — The number of Ranking Keywords where this site is ranking in the top 50 search results.

C. Top Positions #1-3 — The number of Ranking Keywords where this site is ranking in the top 3 search results

D. Top Positions #4-10 — The number of Ranking Keywords where this site is ranking in positions 4-10 in the search results

E. Page Authority — A Moz proprietary metric from 1—100 that predicts how well a page will rank in Google based on a machine learning algorithm of link metrics.

F. Domain Authority® — A Moz proprietary metric from 1—100 that predicts how well a domain will rank in Google based on a machine learning algorithm of link metrics.

Top Competing Content

In the Top Competing Content table, you can explore your competitors’ most visible content and the keywords that content ranks for. You can then expand the results to see which page on your site is ranking for those keywords and in what position. This can help to provide insight into top-performing pages so you can build and refresh content on your own site.

A. Competitor Content The URL that is currently outranking you in the SERPs.

B. Top Competing Keywords — The keywords that the URL in the Competitor Content column is currently outranking you for. When collapsed, this column shows the count of keywords that your competitor is outranking you for.

C. Monthly Volume — The total monthly volume for all the keywords your competitor’s content is outranking you for. Monthly Volume is the number of searches for a keyword in any given month and is an indication of the demand for a keyword.

To see what keywords your competitor’s content is ranking for and how your site compares, click the arrow in the Top Competing Keywords column to expand the table. Within the table’s expanded drawer, you will see the following information.

A. Top Ranking Keywords – The keyword the Competitor Content URL is ranking for. These are keywords where you and your competitor both rank, but they rank higher. Consider developing content and optimizing for these keywords if you compete in the same space as this competitor. Click the keyword to head to Keyword Explorer and further analyze this keyword and its SERP.

B. Competitor Rank – Your competitor’s rank for this keyword and URL combination.

C. Your Rank – Your highest rank for this keyword.

D. Your Content – The highest ranking URL from your site that is ranking for this keyword.

E. Keyword VolumeThe number of monthly searches for this keyword. This indicates the demand for this keyword.

F. Keyword DifficultyA score indicating how hard it would be to rank in the top 10 for this particular keyword. The higher the score, the more difficult it would be to rank.

G. Keyword CTR% — Also referred to as organic CTR, this is the percentage of clicks available to the organic blue links in the SERP. The higher the percentage, the fewer SERP features are present to compete for clicks.

If you’d like to analyze this keyword further, click it to go to Keyword Explorer, where you can see additional metrics and the SERP analysis.

If you’d like to track rankings for this keyword over time or save it for further analysis, click the plus next to the keyword. You can then add the keyword to a Campaign or a Keyword List.
