What is GeoRank?
GeoRank measures rankings and provides insights into how a business and its competitors appear in Google local search results for specific keywords across a geographical area.
Now that local search results can vary based on a person’s geolocation, traditional rank trackers no longer provide enough ranking information to gain real insight into a business’s performance. Someone searching for “sandwich” in 98116 is going to see different search results from someone searching “sandwich” in 98101. GeoRank attempts to fill this gap by helping you get a high-level overview of how you and your competitors are ranking in a specific area.
Locating GeoRank in Moz Local
GeoRank in Moz Local is located within the Listings section of your account. To access this view:
Click Listings in the left-hand navigation menu
Click GeoRank from the expanded left-hand navigation menu
You can view GeoRank for a single location, a group of locations, or for all your locations (when managing multiple with Moz Local).
Updating your GeoRank settings
To get started with GeoRank, you will first need to set your search settings. To do so, click the gear icon at the top right of the Search Settings module.
After clicking the gear icon, a pop-up window will open where you can create and save a new search. Click Add Search Setting to start the setup process. If you have existing search settings, you can edit, delete, or deactivate them from this same window.
After clicking Add Search Setting:
Enter the Name of your search setting setup
Select which Search Devices you want us to pull data for
Enter the Keywords for your search
Select the Locations or Groups you want to see data for
Select the Crawl Frequency and the Day of the Month you’d like the crawl to take place
Select the Measurement units for the distance between grid dots
Select the Distance Between Grid Dots (Up to 10 miles)
Select the Grid Size (will determine how many credits are used per crawl)
Why would I want to pick a larger grid size or a greater distance between grid dots?
The size of your grid and the distance between your grid dots is likely dependent on your market and area. For example, if your business is in a more densely populated area with lots of businesses, you may want to see how your rankings are performing with less distance between city data points by using grid dots that are closer together. Alternatively, if your business is in an area with fewer people or fewer businesses, you may want to see your rankings over a greater distance.
Some other points to consider would be:
Where are your competitors located in relation to your business?
Are you a service area business? If so, how large is your service area?
Do you offer services like delivery that may expand your market?
How does Google view your local market?
Selecting settings to view
After you’ve set up your GeoRank settings and your first crawl has been performed, you can use the Search Settings module to select which search you want to see data for. Use the drop-down so select the search setting and then use the radio buttons to select the keywords and search devices.
GeoRank map views
The GeoRank map view will display a map of your ranking positions. The map view with map pins visible is considered the Leaderboard view. Click on the map marker to see how your business ranks in comparison to your competitors.
Click View GeoRank Grid to see the full map grid of results. This view is called the GeoRank Grid.
Hover over the map dots to see more information about who is ranking for that location.
Locations ranked over time and rankings over time graphs
Below the map view, you’ll see the Locations ranked over time graph when viewing the Leaderboard view (the view with map pins). Locations Ranked Over Time shows how the number of locations are ranked for each positioning tier over time.
When viewing the GeoRank Grid view for a specific location, the Rankings Over Time graph displays the ranking for the dot on the grid you choose and dynamically changes when you choose another dot on the grid.
For either graph, you can hover over the data points to see more information.
GeoRank Insights by Competitor
From the GeoRank Grid view, you’ll have access to the GeoRank Insights by Competitor table which shows the ranking for your location and competitors.
Ranking – The ranking position in Google Maps.
Business – The business that is ranking in that position.
Total Reviews – The total number of reviews found on Google for this business.
Average Review Score – The average rating of all the Google reviews for this location.

GeoRank leaderboard by location
From the Leaderboard view, you’ll have access to the GeoRank Leaderboard by Location, which shows the rankings of each location within your search settings. This view is particularly helpful if you are monitoring rankings for multiple locations or a location group.

Location Name – Your location name.
Ranking – Google Maps rank.
Total Reviews – The total number of reviews found on Google for this business.
