Frequently Asked Questions

  • If you see "Data Not Available", this means that we haven't yet collected data for this keyword. It may be that there isn't data or that we haven't yet collected it from our data sources. We collect new keyword data every month. One way to verify if there is a small amount of search volume is to see if Google Suggest autofills it in when you type in the search box. If it does, that's usually a sign there's at least some volume (even if it's only a few searches a month.)
  • At the moment the data for our Keyword by Site corpus is limited to include US, UK, Canada, and Australian data.
  • Yes! You have the option to purchase extra Keyword Queries per month with subscription add-ons.
  • You can use the dropdown in Explore by Site to find data for your root domain, subdomain, subfolder, or exact page!

Getting Started with Ranking Keywords

The Ranking Keywords section of Keyword Explorer offers the ability to see what keywords your root domain, subdomain, subfolder, or exact page is already ranking for and compare that list to that of your competitors.

To get started, follow the below steps:

  1. Head to Site Overview within the Explore by Site section of Keyword Explorer

  2. Use the drop-down to select whether you’d like to see data for a Root Domain, Subdomain, Subfolder or Exact Page

  3. Enter the site that you’d like to see ranking keywords for, e.g. the root domain - starbucks.com

  4. Use the drop-down to select the search engine country you’d like to see data for

  5. Click Analyze

To get started with Explore by Site for one site, follow the steps outlined above.

Alternatively, if you would like to compare your list of ranking keywords to your competitors, you can follow these steps:

  1. Head to Site Overview within the Explore by Site section of Keyword Explorer

  2. Use the drop-down to select whether you’d like to see data for a Root Domain, Subdomain, Subfolder or an Exact Page

  3. Enter the site that you’d like to see ranking keywords for, e.g. the subfolder - starbucks.com/gift

  4. Use the drop-down to select the search engine country you’d like to see data for

  5. Enter the sites or subfolders(s) for your competitor(s) and use the drop-down to select whether you’d like to see data for their Root Domain, Subdomain, Subfolder, or an Exact Page

  6. Click Compare sites

To get started with Explore by Site for comparing multiple sites or subfolders, follow the steps outlined above.

After clicking Analyze or Compare sites, you’ll see a breakdown which includes the sites you entered along with:

A. Ranking Keywords - The site is ranking within the top 50 search results for this many keywords.

B. Top Positions - How many Ranking Keywords that this site is ranking in the top 10 search results for

C. Page Authority - A Moz proprietary metric from 1-100 which predicts how well a page will rank in Google based on a machine learning algorithm of link metrics.

D. Domain Authority - A Moz proprietary metric from 1-100 which predicts how well a domain will rank in Google based on a machine learning algorithm of link metrics.

After querying a site or sites, various metrics will be noted. You will see how many ranking keywords there are and how many are in the top positions.

Top Ranking Keywords

The Top Ranking Keyword module gives you a sneak preview of some keywords you are already ranking for.

Click on any of the keywords in the top ranking keywords module to learn more about that keyword.

To see additional ranking keywords, click either the Top Ranking Keywords header or See all ranking keywords at the bottom right of the module.

For each keyword, you will see the rank, Difficulty, and Monthly Volume listed.

Difficulty is a score from 0 (easy) to 100 (difficult) that estimates how difficult it is for you to rank higher than current competitors on the first page of search results.

Monthly Volume shows you how often a term or phrase is searched for in Google each month.

Hover over the i in the rank column to see the ranking URL for the keyword listed. You also have the option to click the keyword itself to be taken to the Explore by Keyword section of Keyword Explorer.

Ranking Distribution

The Ranking Distribution graph shows you the keywords your searched URL ranks for, broken down by ranking position.

Hover over the graph to see the number of keywords this URL is ranking for in position #1-3, #4-10 and so on.

In this example we can see this URL is ranking in the top 1-3 positions for 9.6K keywords.

The Ranking Distribution graph visually illustrates the number of keywords your site is ranking for in each position.

Understanding Site Overview Terminology

Monthly Volume - The number of searches for that keyword for any given month - this is an indication of demand for that keyword
Difficulty - Shows you how hard it would be to rank in the top 10 positions in the SERP for this keyword
