  • Our crawler is designed to start at the http version of a site by default. We do not have a way to specify that it start at the https version.
  • Check you've entered the correct URL, excluding the http or https protocol, and without any extra spaces, if you're still stuck please read our troubleshooting guide.
  • Yes, if you enter your subfolder (for example, moz.com/blog) this Campaign will crawl and report on the pages within this folder of your site.
  • Yes, you can track a subdomain like training.website.com or www.website.com. Enter your subdomain and select the checkbox under the Advanced settings link to track your subdomain.

  • You can choose to enter your keywords manually when you set up your Campaign using your own keywords rather than our suggestions.
  • If you are not seeing any keywords pre-populated in the Add Keywords step for Campaign creation, this means we are not able to identify any keywords your tracked site is ranking for in our Ranking Keywords corpus. If you have not already identified keywords you’d like to track, it is recommended that you use our keyword research tool, Keyword Explorer, to research keywords to track in your Campaign.
  • If you’re being alerted that you’ve reached your crawled pages limit and “you’ll need to reduce the number of pages crawled within the Campaign Settings of an active Campaign” when trying to add a new Campaign to your account, this indicates that you have allotted all your pages crawled to your existing Campaigns. Your crawled pages limit is based on the settings for your Campaign and is not indicative of the number of pages actually crawled in each of your Campaigns. You can reduce your crawled pages limit via your Campaign settings. To learn more about your pages crawled limit, please see our Manage Your Campaigns guide.

Create a Moz Pro Campaign Step-By-Step

When creating a new Moz Pro Campaign, you will be asked to enter the following information:

  • The website you want to track (This is not able to be changed after Campaign creation)
  • Your Crawl Limit based on the number of pages on your site and your subscription limits
  • Connect your Google Analytics account (You'll need admin access to the GA account and you can connect after setup, if needed)
  • The keywords or keyword topics you want to track
  • Up to three competitor websites

The Moz Pro Campaign setup wizard will help lead you through this process and you can edit your Campaign information after setup from your Campaign Settings.

Basics: Enter Your Website URL

To get started you just need an active website to set up your Campaign, like moz.com. Please don't enter the http or https protocol.

Once you enter your site, we'll auto-populate your brand name from the domain name. The brand name (or Campaign name) you choose will be used to create brand rules and tag your keywords as branded vs. non-branded. You can modify your brand name at any time through your Campaign Settings.

If you see an Ooops. Our crawlers are unable to access that URL error message when you enter your domain, please check you're entering the correct site without the http or https protocol, and without any extra spaces. If you're still stuck please read our troubleshooting guide.

To start creating your Moz Pro Campaign enter your site.

Track a Subdomain or Subfolder

You can set up your Campaign to track a specific subdomain or subfolder within your site, including the www subdomain. Please be aware that we’ll only crawl the pages we can locate within that subfolder or subdomain so it’s important that your page links to other pages within that section of your site.

To track a subfolder:

  1. Type in the URL e.g. moz.com/blog
  2. Click the Next button

To track a subdomain:

  1. Type in the URL, e.g. training.moz.com
  2. Click the Advanced settings link
  3. Select the Exclude subdomains to track only the subdomain entered checkbox
Create Subdomain Campaign by checking the box under advanced settings.

Crawl: Select Crawl Limit

You'll want to set the site Crawl Limit to roughly the number of pages on your site, or the number of pages you want to crawl on your site. You can adjust this crawl limit after Campaign creation, if needed, through your Campaign settings.

Please note: Rogerbot will crawl up to your selected crawl limit or until it can no longer find pages to crawl, whichever comes first in the crawl process. For example, if your crawl limit is set to 5,000 pages but your site only contains 3,000 pages the crawl will only include 3,000 pages. Alternatively, if your site contains 7,000 pages but your crawl limit is set to 5,000 the crawl will end after crawling 5,000 pages.

During Campaign creation you can select your crawl limit.

Traffic: Connect Google Analytics

Link your Google Analytics (GA) account to your Moz Pro Campaign. You will need to be the administrator of the Google Analytics account to set this up and be logged into your Google account that manages that GA profile.

Use the Account drop-down and Profile drop-down to select the one you want. Then click the Next button.

If you're having trouble connecting, just click on the Skip button. You can always add those details later through your Campaign Settings tab.

Connect Google Analytics to your Campaign during setup.

Search: Select Search Engines

Next, choose your search engines and locations for which you'd like to track rankings data. We recommend selecting the location where the majority of your audience is based.

If you only want to track Google rankings, you can get the most out of the 4 search engine fields by entering Google Desktop and Mobile for 2 locations like so:

Google US

Google Mobile US

Google GB

Google Mobile GB

If you want to gather Landing Pages data, make sure that at least one of the locations you choose is an English-language Google search engine, such as en-AU, en-US, or en-GB.

Click the Next button to save your selections.

Select the search engines for which you'd like to track rankings.

Keywords: Enter your Keywords

Time to add some keywords! We’ll provide a list of recommended terms based on your site. These suggestions are pulled from the Ranking Keywords section of our Keyword Explorer tool. Don’t like them? Then no worries! Delete those keywords and input your own.

If you're working from a spreadsheet, you can copy and paste them into the box. When adding keywords, Remember that they need to be separated by commas or line breaks (returns).

You don’t have to add all of your keywords right now, though, so don’t stress too much.

You can always manage your tracked keywords from the Rankings section once you've set up your Campaign.

You can add in keywords to track during Campaign creation.

What if I’m not seeing any keyword suggestions populated in the Add Keywords section of my Campaign setup?

If you’re not seeing any keyword suggestions populated in the Add Keywords section of your Campaign setup, this means that we are not able to find any keywords in our Ranking Keywords corpus that your site is already ranking for. Our keyword corpus for ranking keywords is large but it doesn’t include all keywords. You can read more about it in our Ranking Keywords guide.

If you have keywords you’re looking to target, you can go ahead and enter them manually using the steps outlined above. Or, if you’re not sure what keywords to track, you can use our Keyword Explorer tool to do some keyword research.

Add Locations and Labels

You can also add local keywords and keyword labels to help manage your keywords. Start typing your location by city name or postal code, like Seattle, for example, and select the location from the drop-down. Each location will take up additional keyword allowances. So if you enter 10 keywords across 2 locations, this will require 20 keywords. If you enter 10 keywords across 3 locations, this will require 30 keywords, and so on.

You can also add additional locations and labels after you set up your Campaign from the Rankings section.

To track keywords locally by city or postal code, start typing in the add locations box and then select the location via the drop-down.
You can also add labels to your keywords.

Competitors: Enter Your Competitors

Lastly, add some competitors. Enter up to three competitors to see how you compare across keyword rankings and link metrics.

A quick note: for competitors we can't track subfolders so please enter the domain URL, like searchengineland.com, for example.

Add in up to three competitors to track.

Draft Campaigns

If you get called away part-way through Campaign creation, you can head back to your Draft Campaigns to pick up where you left off.

To access your draft Campaigns head to the Manage your campaigns page and select Draft Campaigns from the drop-down.

Select draft campaigns from the drop-down to pick up where you left off.
